That makes me glad I changed the box on my 1150 when it got noisy and before it ate itself up....
I think that the cause in my case was using Castrol GL4/5 oil and not sticking to GL5. Dickhead.

Bloody hell, somethings got really mashed. Bad luck, mate. Hopefully someone out there has a decent used box for sale.

Yeah I think I'll ask around with a new thread. Just not sure what boxes from other bikes will fit. I'm not bothered about the different gearing too much as I only use it on tarmac these days.

I've always used GL5 in my final drive and gearbox, I'd like to know what ( if true ) using GL4 causes ? I mean why ? We read a lot of threads about oil and it seems that the 1100 /1150 will be happy on a few different engine oils yet the gearbox is such a sensitive thing if you move away from GL5.

ive just changed my clutch and geabox on my gs1150 today used a very good rt gearbox just fired up the engine fantastic now no rumbles sounds good ,just got to do one fork seal then ill use it for work good luck drillam use a torque wrench and take your time doing the job I did my out side with no garage.

Thanks Sheene. I've looked at a couple of GS and RT boxes on ebay today, but with pretty much similar mileages to mine. Makes me wonder if they're worth buying or not. Anyone any idea how long one of these boxes can be expected to live? Is 50k all you get from them or have I just been unlucky?

Can't you just have your box rebuilt ?

I'd feel better about having a rebuild ( by a knowledgable mechanic ) than taking a punt on a high mile second hand jobby from eBay.

Steve Scriminger WAS the man but has retired due to health reasons, BUT if you look on his website which is Scriminger engineering he directs you to a man who can rebuild the box. For what it's worth Scriminger did the box on my R1100RS SE last year and cost of stripping it off the bike, rebuilding and putting it all back together was only £450.
If you are after a box, look on e bay Germany, I got loads of RS parts off there. Most very reasonably priced too.

Mikeyboy is the guy who has taken over the engineering side of Steve Sciminger's business.

From another thread:
Steve scrim has retired, I have bought a lot of his tooling and spares for the engine and transmission repairs.........And about a dozen gearboxes for reconditioning

Is this a GL5 rated oil? I was just about to use but now I'm worried lol!

I had about 4 people with 100,ooo miles plus on 1150 boxes still original bearings etc

Oils changed by me every 6000miles approximately Always GL5 spec oil only

1100 May not be quite so durable with a couple of Taper roller bearings to take into account

Thanks for all your answers guys. I've already asked Mikeyboy on another thread today for a price, so I'll await his reply before making a decision, but am coming around to the idea of a rebuild.

If that was me I split the box and see what's damaged , more likely it's collapsed bearing , just replace all bearings and seals and you save a bunch , I had same problem on 1150rt with 28k miles on it , intermediate shaft bearing broke .

Thanks BP I'll have a think about that

Here's your answer.
