Loopy Gear Indicator

is the unit that needs cleaning on the back of the gearbox
thanks

Yes, on the back of the gearbox, in front of the swing arm.
Fiddly to remove and refit but possible.
I replaced the torx bolts with hex head bolts for easier spanner access in the future.

Bought a new one. Can now start bike normally. A note, though - the new one wasn't at the neutral position as supplied, so best to check if you have to replace it.

I dismantled the faulty one and can't see any sign of corrosion. However, it looks as though the potentiometer tracks may be worn. Any thoughts? I have a pic but it appears I can't post it. Anyone wants to see it I can email it (114Kb).

Another thought

It occurred to me that if mine simply wore out (I'll wave my Avo at it and see what happens), at what point did others go awol other than by water ingress.

Mine's done around 25k (2004 model - I was out of the country for 3 years then couldn't ride it for a year after that).

Incidentally, it comes apart easily - I didn't have to break into it. There's a further O-ring (exactly like the one on the outside) inside, which appeared to have been effective in mine. However, I sealed the new one with silicon before fitting.

My THIRD gear position sensor is now failing. I splash around a lot in deep puddles, rather than fords. It just annoys me.
It seems that nobody has any definitive cure, other than allowing to dry, spraying with WD40 or replacing the unit. Is that as good as it gets :nenau
I need someone to say, "this is what you do and it'll never fail again"

You cannot remove the sensor with a socket, it needs a slim E8 torx spanner. I dont have one and it would seem that nobody, anywhere near me for sixty miles has one. I cannot believe that I have wasted an afternoon driving to many tool dealers, in vain.Looks line an internet purchase soon. Not sure what I will achieve anyway, I just want a close look at the sensor. Perhaps Ill cover everything with vaseline.
