Hi folks, have searched the forum (and internet) and can't find an exact copy of the problem I had.

First of all the clutch lever feels ok (slight resistance to being pulled in and springs back on release) and the gears change as normal.

It started with a large rattle/knock/vibration when slipping the clutch in 1st gear as i was preparing to move off or in slow traffic. Once going there didn't seem to be any issues until I was accelerating hard overtaking a lorry and it felt like i had the clutch partly engaged as the gear was slipping. I stopped then and decided to head home, but this time even with the gear lever fully let out the gear was slipping. I noticed on the rev counter that any revs over about 3k and the gear would slip completely (regardless of which gear was engaged). It was on a slight uphill part of the road that the drive went completely.

On the centre stand if i start up, engage 1st the rear wheel will start to spin (with a loud knocking and rattling) but under any load the drive is lost completely.

I had to get a recovery truck to take the bike to the local BMW garage (Calterdon, Inverness) but as it was a Friday night, no-one will be looking at it for a couple of days at least.

Does anybody have any idea of what my issue is? I fear a very expensive investigation/fix coming and am not really in a fiscal position to deal with it at the moment.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you clutch has gone

Loads of info on changing it on the internet but it is quite a big job involves splitting the bike in half.

It's like a car - gearbox has to come away from the engine. The symptoms suggest the clutch plate has broken up and the pieces are clattering about. It could be the shaft splines but it would have expected an total drive failure with no noise.

The final drive UJs are easy to check so do them first. Then get organised to split the bike. Vids on YouTube to help.

Hi folks,

The bike has been fixed now. It looks like the friction material on the clutch plate had disintegrated, there were pieces of this material all throughout the clutch and housing.

Cost an arm and a leg to fix (along with several other bits and bobsd that needed doing - I really need to start washing the salt of the brakes every time I use it.

Calterdon's new bike tech really did do a cracking job on it and balancing the cyclinders and looked like he really knew and cared about the bikes he was working on.
