There have been a few messages about the cosmetic site of things, so I feel jsutified in raising this.

My R-reg 1100GS is beginning to look decidedly tatty in places, especially around the cylinder barrels, the front engine plate and on the sides of the engine casing around the oil return pipe (on the left) where the silver paint is chipping off. There is a bit of corrosion underneath, I'm not sure if the corrosion is pushing the paint off or the loss of paint is allowing corrosion to form.

1 - Any ideas how to spuce it up? I don't want to go to the trouble of taking the barrels off, blasting and respraying unless I absolutely have to
2 - Related to number 1, what sort of paint is appropriate (apart from being the right colour...)
3 - What posessed BMW to paint the engine in the first place?
4 - Anyone else afflicted?

my R reg 1100 is the same after running it through the winter its got a large blister on the front casing just where the spray from the front wheel hits the engine and the front forks are losing their coating as well, i am going to replace the fork seals i was thinking of painting them while i have got them off. so some suggestions on the type of paint finish would be great

I'm sure I read here somewhere (might've been Vern posting) that Hammerite silver is the right colour to re-paint the engine.

My mate had fork stanchion & cylinder head paint issues on his 2001 GS, fixed under warranty, so not much use to you, I'm afraid....:(

Did you ever paint the casing as mine has really suffered?
