Lost a tooth on 1200GS and it's not cheep...

My bike wouldn't change down halfway through it's last journey. Tried to go up which worked, but inevitably ended up in 6th with a very smelly clutch.

I was hoping it was some simple selector issue. No. Took it to my BMW dealer who have stripped the box to find a tooth missing. Not done too much other damage but it may as well have as retail repair is......£1,700 :barf

I'm hoping there is a significant contribution from BMW, the bike is 5 years old and only done 13,000 miles.

Anyone any experience of a similar problem?
 
thats effin crazy dough for a bike g/box,could understand if it was put together with high spec parts but it's not.:eek:
 
A complete new box is only 2k (only, ha) so they say.

I will know if there will be a contribution on Monday.

If there's no contribution I won't be getting it done at BMW so will try elsewhere. I'll fight hard though for something, anyone would expect a gearbox to last longer than that!
 
Try motorworks for a replacement box. I picked one up earlier this year out of a 3000 mile bike for £800 which had new gearbox seals and was good as new:thumb

If you want it rebuilt, speak to Steve at Scriminger engineering:thumb

You may get something but you will have to buy the box from them. When mine went, it was 3 years out of warranty and had done 70k. I cheekily asked my local dealer about a contribution and they said it would be free fitting if I bought a new box. Still far too much money:rolleyes:

Having been there with an ABS pump, I've been told that if the bike's up to 5 years old; it's a major component failure and there's dealer service history, there's a good chance of BMW doing a deal (I got the £1250 part). I hope that your bike's the right side of 5K. Good luck!
 
Bad luck with the gearbox, i would pick up a second hand box Ebay.de is good for parts.. I have one from an 05 but it may be different.
I see the WC will have the gearbox inside the engine casing requiring a crankcase split to get at it.
 
I was half expecting a thread about a dental tooth stuck in a cooling fin. thought 'cheep' alluded to more sillyness.

Ah yes, I see the mistake now...

Thanks for the responses, will update on Monday with good news I hope from those lovely Germans...

Even though its 5 years old I'm assuming there's 5 years worth of service stamps etc in the book ?
 
Good news, BMW will pay the £1200 parts, (obviously it won't cost them that), just leaves me a labour bill around £550. Still an expense I shouldn't expect given the circumstances.

Some good news, if you can call it that. Its so sad the build quality has gone so far down on such good bikes - at 1 time anyway

And as you've paid something (a rather large something to be truthful) you'll get warranty on the work.

I'd call it fantastic news. I can't think of any other manufacturer who would look after their customers like this on a 5 year old bike. Despite the low mileage, this issue is nothing to do with build quality and is just one of those things that sometimes happen with metal things:thumb
