Lost front right fuel tank pannel

Hi

While accelerating onto the motorway my front right fuel tank pannel came off and bent the holdinfpg screw so I am now minus the pannel and I think I need a new seat pannel also

Question is , has this happened to anybody else? I had the. I've had it checked previously for the fuel pump recall by the local dealer. Would this pannel have been removed? I am trying to understand why it may have happened.

It happened a LOT when the first rash (deliberate phrasing) of 12's came out.....nearly always because the fastener wasn't turned around to latch in quite enough, so yes, a well known (if dated) problem I'm afraid.

Happened to me in 2004, solved by drilling two small holes inside the large plastic panel through the webs each side of the dzus fastener, then passing a cable tie through it the prevent it coming off again. I had some crease marks in the alloy tank side panel but they were hidden by the baglux tank bag I had.

Why not go back to said slip road if local on a quiet Sunday & see if it's still there ? you might be lucky then again whenever Iv had things fall off bikes someone (deliberately) run them over

Thanks. Did find the pannel but it was in no shape to be of any further use. Will modify attachment when I replace it. I will give my dealer a call to ask the question, was it replaced in a proper manner.

The early tank panels had 3 quick turn fixings. The one at the front that is hidden away is very hard to get "right". BMW have changed the idea and you can buy a kit to replace it with a normal bolt.
Or you could make one yourself.

It's something that you get used to checking whenever it's had work done. In the end, whether at a dealer or an independent it's your loss if it flies off so worth checking the forward lower fastener is secure before you leave.

I lost my left fastener but replaced both sides with a Nippy Normans/Wunderlich dzus kit. Too expensive but effective - no more so than cable ties but, a tad more professional.

As above, one of mine wrapped itself around my knee some years ago, a known fault and your dealer will sell you the newer fittings at a very modest cost.

Yeah, my 04 GS has the fastener missing from the RH side-panel; like it when I bought it a couple of years ago. It is held on with the two outside Dzuz fasteners and a cable-tie on the lower front inside one. That last mentioned one is shite; it's so difficult to access and even more difficult to replace once it's gone AWOL. As far as I can see the fastener is not available as a seperate item. Cable ties aren't easy either but at least they offer some kind of security. There's a huge pressure of air behind that panel when you're motoring on a bit and it needs a strong fastener under there to resist that pressure. Looks like like shit design doesn't it. Lovely bike though isn't it!
