Lost illumination to rider's display

I was riding home on the M40 last night in driving rain when the I lost the backlighting on the speedo, rev counter and RID - all other electrics were working and after about 20-30 minutes the backlighting returned to normal.

Is this a cunning BMW innovation to reduce battery drain in poor weather, anybody else have this happen? Might it have been due to the heavy rain?

I've ridden in some very extended heavy rain, and not lost any illumination on mine, (09 plate), dunno what else to offer really.

Must have been quite disorienting not being able to read the dials!

Was it a proper loss or just the system deciding it was light enough not to need backlighting?

+1. The instrument lighting is not on all the time. There's a light sensor in the rev counter. You usually notice them coming on in tunnels etc.

Proper loss, it was pitch black on the M40 about 11pm in heavy driving rain.
