Hi

Managed to loose my key today on the M5 and now find myself in Bristol with bike (thanks BMW) but no key.

What I need to know is can a main dealer make me another in the morning - I do have the key code or will I have to fly my spare over from Guernsey !!!

YEs I know :blast so dont even go there although I can think of a few who will chip in !

Any answer would be great, if the dealer cant make one then its plan B - which I havn't got yet !!!

Dealer will be able to order a key. Took mine a day or so to come in. You will also need your V5 and proof of ID too before ordering the key, although they accepted a scanned emailed copy of mine.

If you are in a hurry, looks like you should get your spare couriered over, or perhaps cheaper to hire a bike in the mean time?

Check your various insurance policies as some of these cover lost keys etc, and you may well be able to claim here.

Stable door, Horse and all that, but couldn't you carry the small slim black plastic wallet key with you? Mines in my wallet just in case. It's a bit delicate compared to the proper metal key, but it works as a get-you-home spare and it is microchipped to work with the immobiliser.

As for the replacement key, I believe that once the dealer gets it they will need to program the immobiliser part of the bikes ecu to accept the key code for the new keys. Might be worth asking if that involves coding ALL your keys and not just the new one, in case you need to get your spare flown over anyway.

Might be worth a call to the Police asking if they or the HATO patrols have found a set of BMW keys - you never know your luck. You might find they turn up in a month or so and can be posted to you as a spare set if they are found.:nenau

I got a new key for my bike and AFAIK it was ordered from the key number and came already coded

Chris, prob no use to you, timewise, but I'm coming over tomorrow (tues) pm on the Clipper and will be at CW at 0830 on Weds morning.

If all else fails I could pick your spare up (if you know where it is :augie) and bring it over.

Doesn't that kind of thing restore your faith in Human nature!:thumb2

As far as I understand it, the bikes come with three keys plus the plastic 'spare'. You get one, the dealer keeps one and the factory keeps one. In the event of a key loss, the supplying dealer should have spare number one. If you lose another, it has to be sourced from the factory. If you lose them all, it's goodnight Vienna.

Well guys,

Finally managed to get back to sunny Guernsey after my epic adventure including in no particular order -

Key flown to Bristol
Trip to Sotton Airport from Bristol to drop off Katie who brought the key over
Back to Bristol to pick up bag as not taken panniers as only away for a few days
Back to Portsmouth to Get ferry
Arrive at ferry on time at 8am to find the boat was late by 2 hours

Oh well

Thanks for all the advice and to Arsey for his offer although he has only just left the island due to the weather.

Also thanks to BMW assist who got me to Bristol with no hassle or charge !!

Now where did I put that key ?:blast
