Hi,

I lost the spare key to my GS12. How much is a replacement? I guess there's some sort of chip in it but is there not a possibility to get a metal key without a chip which I could use for the EWS workaround should it be necessary?

Thanks

When I bust mine accidentally and asked thye dealr to order a replacement he did it for nothing. Never got a coffee from him at the time though so I do feel a little short changed! :D

Spare key

Last week I tried 4 local key-cutting shops to see if I could also have a key cut, less chip, to use with panniers etc. Answer from all of them was "sorry mate, you can only get these from BMW". Can anyone out there supply these blanks?

Why, pray, do you need a separate (useless) key just for the panniers etc?

What's the etc? Undoing the seat?

Think about it for a minute or two.....

Your bike needs its chip.

A chipped key, without a chip is.............................a key.

You could use your front door key. That doesn't have a chip.

But it won't work.

You could use the key to the safe of the Bank of England. That doesn't have a chip either.

But it won't work.

YOU NEED YOUR CHIP - FOR YOUR BIKE - IT COMES IN CHIPPED KEY - FOR YOUR BIKE!

I want a spare key for my Land Rover Discovery...
Cost of Key = £70 + vat
Cost of lock smith to cut it Approx £5
Cost of LandRover to program key approx £40 + Vat

Total approx £129 all in:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

GOD, I WISH I OWNED A KEY SHOP!

To assist Mr Wapping in his understanding of this original posting, I assume that TW intended to use the chipless key in the "dead" EWS ring/ignition whilst using the live key in the substiture ring attached to the connector block.
I'm personally looking for a cheap chipless key to keep at work and be available for people to access my panniers for stuff I keep in there whilst I'm in meetings or out on the road in the pool car. Chipped keys are too expensive for people to lose.
That ok by you Mr W or do you have any further helpful advice?

i wanted an unchipped key to keep with my spare anyenna ring, thought it would be safer this way, if antenna did fail i could use the chipped key for the immobiliser and unchipped in ignition but even if i left the unchipped key and spare ring together they wouldn't be that much use to anyone else.

I think the keys are (relatively) cheap - mine was around £25 from Bahnstormer, but I assume that is a BMW part price so available elsewhere. I also read on here that BMW were giving a free second metal key to people who only got a single plastic spare - perhaps a little embarrased at the cost cutting. I don't know for sure as I'd already bought mine.

where d'you get a key that cheap?

That's what I got charged by my local B*W dealer (John Clarks Tayside)

Had to take vehicle registration document and passport in before they would order the key.
