loud banging from the engine...

hello guys,

need some help, just had the right hand cylinder replaced after the whole lot failed, and then 2 weeks later the gs developed an oil leak on the left hand cyclinder,
all the damage and failed parts where replaced and sorted by vines in Guildford and i thought that would be the end of it, but....

on the way home from box hill this afternoon after testing i'd replaced the rear pads properly, the right hand cylinder developed a very very loud knocking sound, almost like a banging,

the bike feels good, no loss of power or anything, just the loud banging,

i know that the gs makes a lot of noise anyway but this is different,

the oil level appears ok, not too full and not too low, and there is no smoke coming from the exhaust, and nothing leaking from the engine,

anyone got some advice?

oh and its a 07gs with 17500miles on the clock

Could be anything - sounds like you need to get it collected by the dealer

Bloody hell mate you are having a 'mare! Impossible to even guess what's wrong without hearing it but I don't think there's any option but to get onto Vines A.S.A.P.

tell me about it, its really starting to fecking piss me off, when the bikes running good, which isnt that often at the mo, its awesome,

dunno if it sounds like the piston is trying to escape, got it back from boxhill, only about a 10 min drive back to mine and the knocking had got quiter but was still fecking loud, funny thing is that it had just started to do it, been out for about an hour or so and stopped at boxhill for a brew and when i started the bike up to leave, there was the knocking sound,

but if this carries on, bye bye gs....

Certainly wouldn't blame you but after the initial breakdown your tale of woe does seem to be down to dealer / workshop issues.

just managed to drag myself out to the garage, having man flu isnt fun, and found that the beast had hardly any oil in it, appears that vines didnt top it up after the oil leak a few days ago,

so, topped it up with oil, a full 3/4 of a litre and the knocking noise is allot quieter, but is still there, and the bike still doesn't sound happy,

is it just because the right hand pot is new with new internals and they all sound like that when new?

or something allot more serious?

In your original post you stated that the oil seemed ok - so did you actually check it at this point and how did you check it.

If there is no oil now and the sound decreased when you added oil it seems like the right hand cylinder was being starved of oil.

Personally i would not have added oil but contacted Vines and asked WTF is going on.
How many miles have you done since the cylinder change?
Seems like a few strong words with Vines is the correct way forward as they may well have caused the issues.

If they say - they all sound like that sir - then insist on listening to a new bike and compare

Are you absolutely certain it was short of oil? Oil can get trapped around and about the system and reported levels can be inconsistent. Since your level was OK per your 1st post, I suspect it is still OK unless it is visibly leaking. It may now be overfilled.

Is it burning the oil in large quantities? Oil causes very bad 'pinking'.

when ii checked oil last night it was about 10 mins after stopping the bike at home to let it settle a bit, and it wasn't full, just over half,

when i went out this morning it was literally just over min level on the sight glass, so started it up to see what happened, and all the oil disappeared and the knocking became louder,
stopped the engine and let the oil settle for another 10 mins and there was no oil in it, left it for another 20 mins and it only crept up to just below half
so topped it up to just below full

knocking has reduced but is still there, took the bike for a short (5mins) ride around the block and the bike felt fine, no lurches or stalls and nothing leaking smoking from it

gonna get in contact with vines tommorrow as feeling to shit at the mo, but the gsa as a goodwill gesture sounds like a good idea!!!!

Measuring the oil when the engine has not got good and hot is unlikely to give a reliable indication. I reckon it needs at least 5 miles and preferably 10+.

like your thinking, but sounds expensive, can i fix it at home, or is it lose the bike to the garage for another few days?
