I'll be travelling through India on my 650 next year and wanted some advice on horns.

It seems that the Fiamm ones are the best to go for. I was assuming that in terms of loudness, air horns would be louder.

When I spoke to the Fiamm UK rep, he recommended a disk horn (pair) over a pair of air horns because of robustness, volume (110 vs 107 db) and resistance to the elements. The disk horn also seems to have a lower amp usage.

What do you guys reckon? Does an air horn give a different kind of blast?

Top of the page... Nippy Norman... Go to horns......... Stebel nautilus is your only man. I have on on each of our cars and on the bike.:bow :bow :bow

Agreed 139 decibels :):D :D
too close and y:eek: our Ears Bleed

Even Makes CHAVS:spitfire :spitfire with Boomboxes jump when you hit the Stebel Nautilus

Wow! Those things aren't exactly small and weight 600g! 139db must be pretty loud, though!

Any thoughts on the air horn vs. disk horn?

Cheers

Believe me, the Nautilus or the Magnum are the only way to go.
I've got the Nautilus compacts, slightly lighter, just as loud.

I prefer me windy ones, to the resonating disc:rob

Chappy is correct, airhorns are a pain in the arse because they always stop working at some point and they are heavy too, more awkward to wire up and route the pipeing aswell and not that much louder :thumb

No trouble from my twin Fiamm airhorns and a piece of piss to fit.

Far more effective than the Stebel thing which I`m not at all impressed with.

My Airhorns are mounted under the beak of my GS...compressor inside the headstock casting.

Tarka,
Any chance of a photo or two?

Hiya mate,
For some reason the 'manage attachments' option isn`t working, but check out post #6 on this...

If you remove the stock 1100 horn, and I imagine the 1150 too,the headstock casting has a hollow chamber perfect for installing an Airhorn compressor.
I even used the supplied brackets for the compressor and trumpets as well as the supplied air line.

I`ve done this to both of my 1100`s with Fiamm twin trumpet Airhorns.
On the LegoBike I`ve fitted them inside the fairing.

If you want more pics either look for my 'I spent the afternoon with my loved one' post (my shiny red 1100) or PM me an email addy.

Can`t speak for the 1200,but I`m not interested in that, and anyway, the recovery truck horn is hellish loud to start with. :D

Anyone know if the magnum will fit in the standard posistion on a f650??

The standard horn on the 650 is crap, the one i had on my old xr125 was louder :rob :D

Whatever horns you get - make sure you paint them pretty colours :thumb

PS - don't bother - nobody will take any notice :D

Does an air horn give a different kind of blast?

Very much so :thumb

Airhorns give a very attention grabbing and trouser shatting 'gerroutathefeckingwaybecauseI`m comingthrough' blast.

Not too many vehicles have Airhorns,so people really pay attention to good blast from them.....jumping in their car seat and almost,or actually, hitting their car roof with their head in fright.
Wayward pedestrians either leap off the ground or are rooted to the spot in fear. :D

halfords

dotcaf, the indians have a liking for loud horns, SO the louder your is the better :D

Also don't ride at night, everyone drives with high beams on at all times, the ammount of carnage i saw out there every morning as a result of head on collisions between trucks was unbelivable

I'm not sure about the stebel but I fitted something very similar to one of these to mine in the original mounting position. As it is a tight fit under the mudguard I had to chop the trumpet end about a bit to get it to fit in but it is certainly a lot louder than the OE horn.

Had the Magnum, it was loud but wasn't loud enough. So I went for the Nautilus...  I'v said it before but don't fit it to the bike then try in while you are still in the garage...nearly pooped myself! :o

Its fun to keep an eye on the MOT tester though as he will jump a mile when he tries the horn to see if it works.:D
