Trying to diagnose a loud knocking noise in my engine. Its an 03 1150GS with 58,000 on it. I have owned the bike since new and this noise first appeared at about 25,000 but is getting louder. On start up the bike is as quiet as a mouse , when it is at 5 bars or more the knock is there and gets louder the hotter the engine gets. The knock is like a big end only it cant be a bearing or it would have given up long ago. I am thinking left hand cam chain as it seems to come from the left ( I have replaced the L/H tensioner twice ). About to remove the L/H head and barrel to have a look at the chain tensioner and guide. What ya all think !

is it there all the time or just at tickover?

If it's at tickover very slightly tension the throttle just wee bit just enough to lift the slack out of the cable

Does it go away If it does reach under the throttle body and put a little pressure on the cable quadrant behind the body and does it disappear ?

Quite a common occurrence but usually the right side goes first

Did you put in the up graded one in?

Noise

Have had two of the updated ones in but am now running with the original.
The noise is there at slightly more than tick over and stays as you rev it. You can actually feel it through the bike when riding , it seems to be at its worst when holding it between 4,000 and 5,000 going up hill with load on it.
I was thinking could the chain be hitting the engine casing as this could go on for a long time without causing a lot of damage !

Get hold of steptoe he's the man to ask.

Just spent the last 30 minutes reading the bit about the rails and the rocker gear etc. Looks as if some stripping required.
Going to France and Spain mid August , better get started
Ugly Cow (from this Parish) also thought it was cam chain or something in that area !

Just spent most of today stripping head, rockers, barrel etc and everything is as good as new. Guide rail and tensioner look perfect. Nothing jumping out at me ! Where to now ....................... The PUB !

Just to add a little more information, SlapheadGSER came over last week and the sound is a loud hollow knock at camshaft speed, when the clutch is pulled in the, noise alters in tone slightly. Its a real puzzle

You may need to take the other barrel off to eliminate the both guides/chains.

Steptoe, have you experienced the guide breaking and consequently heard a loud knocking?

I know this is going to sound silly, but go around the bike and hit the crash bars firmly with the flat of your hand. (and bash tray mounts as well)

I had a loud knocking early on with my 1150 Adv, it rose and fell/vanished with revs and after much scratching of head and worry, it turned out to be the crash bar upper mounting point was loose......:blast

Harmonic resonance and a loose hollow tubes can play havoc with concerns over internal damage and mysterious knocking noise worries.

Worth a go :nenau

I'd second this. I had an awful knocking vibration and 4.5-5 k and general rumbling at all revs. R/H engine bar had snapped by top mount.

No I checked that, but spoke to slaphead GSER today and I don't think he has got the 1200 cam chain tensioner fitted. So this may be the problem. Thanks for the replies. :thumb2
