Lower fork bridge pinch bolt torque setting

Morning all,

Still finding more things to tinker with and today’s job on my R1150GSA is to repaint the lower fork bridge (the one the mudguard mounts to) and replace the punch bolts. Problem is I cannot find the torque value.

I’ve had a search through previous posts but can’t find the answer.

I’ve found the following two possibilities on the web, but the naming doesn’t align.

Fastener, fixed tube and fork bridge - 45nm
Slider tube bridge to slider tube - 25nm

Putting a torque wrench on the existing bolts, 25nm appears too low and 45nm too high.

Confirmation would be much appreciated.

Better to check bolt size I think that they are a cap head allen bolt M8 x 1.25

25nm sounds about right as they are into alloy

They’re M8x20 Fillister head. That was the easy bit to find

20mm long Sheesh not much thread then I forgot they were that short


A basic rule for tightening anything is to screw in to clean threads by hand without requiring force on the lever

At the point where you need to apply force ? It's one eighth of a turn 45 degrees , up to one quarter of a turn 90 degrees MAX

please note this is a Ball park figure It has worked for me many times and I have never rounded out threads and have gone and rechecked later with the torque wrench and its just usually about right at around 45 degrees

Except I always go find the torque wrench for the rear wheel mount bolts on the FD

Thanks Ian. I found that but wasn’t sure of the descriptions and which was referring to the lower bridge pinch bolts.

Santa very kindly (among others) provided some info so I’m all good now!
