Common sense and engineering principles indicate that if you have to carry a heavy, unaerodynamic object on a motorcycle you should carry it as low down and as far forward (towards the rider) as possible. Presumably this is the reasoning behind the pillion mounting option for the topbox.
Why, then, did they decide that when mounting the box in the conventional position behind the pillion, instead of mounting it immediately above the rear light and behind the pillion pad, they would build a little tower thingy (they even call it a bridge - bridge over what?
) to raise it a few inches? To give it the best possible chance of making the bike as top heavy as possible and to have the greatest possible effect on aerodynamics?
My pillion never uses the grab handles so the luggage bridge is redundant as far as I'm concerned. So I want to remove the bridge and mount the box lower down on the 'deck'. It's not rocket science to make an adapter place to achieve this but I don't want to re-invent the wheel if someone has already done it. Anyone tried? Anyone found a product for sale that allows this with the standard box?
If not I'm going to spend some happy hours butchering some bits of scrap in my garage - the mounting plate is so ugly as it is I'm hardly likely to make it look worse by attaching a home made adapter plate, am I?

I'd be up for droppping you a pint if you'll pm or publish your drawing.
