Lowered peg vs. side stand

I have just discovered a problem when installing lowered foot pegs on my R1150GSA.

In a nutshell, the side stand bar hits the underside of the newly lowered right-side foot peg.

Please see photos below. And the quality looking foot extension is my own invention. No abuse please, it works.

Has anyone experienced this problem with the side stand clashing with the foot pegs? I've scoured the forum, but this problem seems to be unique.

I am aware that the angle of my side stand is more excessive than other GS's, hence the homemade side stand. Does anyone know if there is there any way I can adjust the angle (other than putting my bike on its side and jumping on the side stand to bend it)?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Might be a need for some side stand "re-engineering" to stop the clash. The ply "bigfoot" has just caused several Touralich followers to have to nip to the meds cabinet:D Mine was fashioned out of an old fishbox but my sidestand beats yours for rust:augie

Looks like you've got the Wunderlich peg lowering kit fromthe pics. FWIW I've got the same kit on the same bike and the sidestand clears the inside of the peg no problem . The gap is only about 1/4" though. Could your stand have been bent out or the original footpeg bracket been bent in at some point in the past?

Partially solved

It is indeed the Wunderlich kit. As you suggest, it is possible the side stand was bent out at some stage, hence the lack of clearance. I have partially solved the problem by applying brute force to the lever by pushing it in. I can now push the side stand past the peg, however the lowered gear level touches the side stand spring when I engage 1st gear. Is this common?

I had to go out and check mine in the garage to discover that my set up does the same. Not a mark on the steel spring, as you'd expect and a slight mark on the back of the alloy gear lever. Must have been like that for at least 35000 miles and never caused a problem. It's only a very light contact against a spring that, by it's very nature, can deflect out of the way. I wouldn't be concerned if I were you. At least you've stopped the stand fouling on the pegs.

Thanks for the info High-Tower.

I've found another issue with the lowered pegs. One of the reasons for the installing the lowered pegs is create a more relaxed riding position for all 6'3" of me. I've now discovered that my right knee hits the crash bar. Not a big problem on the road, but could be a problem off-road. Not sure if you've also got an Adventure, but do you have this problem too?

Yep, I'm on an Adventure too. I'm 6'6'' with a 36'' inside leg. My knee does contact the crash bar and as you say it's not a problem on tarmac. On the odd occasion I've taken it onto the lanes it's been ok 'cos I'm stood up on the pegs, but generally I prefer my 650 off tarmac. It's a helluva lot lighter and I'm not so bothered about the all to frequent scratch and dent.

I've also fitted some alloy spacers (from Vern of this parish) under the seat mountings to raise the front of the seat 3/4'' and the back 1/2'' which has helped with the comfort.

SWMBO has what can only be described as a booster cushion, made from a bread board, some furniture foam and vinyl fabric strapped to the pillion seat so she can see past me. She's only about 5'2''. It looks a bit odd but she loves it on our foreign trips as she gets a chance to see the scenery.

For anyone else (especially tightwads!) yet to buy your lowering kit, I bought a pair of used R1100S footpegs from Motorworks for not a lot and they lower the pegs about the same amount. You can use KLT/RT pegs with a bit taken off as well and get bouncy rubbers too! I think I got the springs as well.
