Lowering a 1200GS

I have the low seat on my '06 12GS but get numbnuts when riding any distance.
Thinking of going to see Digger Seats in Newport to see what he could do re-modeling my low seat.
The alternative is to lower the bike and fit a decent seat, the height with a low seat is just about enough for me.
Also like to know what is involved in lowering the suspension, I wont be offroading so clearance shouldnt be an issue.

Do you have to lower back and front?
How low can the suspension be lowered before it affects the side and centre stand?
Where would the best place be to purchase the replacement bits? I dont want expensive kit as I'm no riding God by any means so wont benefit by spending tons of cash!
Is it a thing a novice can do or would it be beyond me? (all ive done on the bike is fit accessories and lights)

Anything else i need to take into consideration?
 
just got a set of Hyperpro 30mm low springs for mine.
I will let you know how i get on when i fit them ;)

Hi Buz - I had my 05 12GS lowered about an inch with a custom made reaction lever (if that's the correct name) and then had my centre stand shortened because of clearance issues. I still have both these items. It would be an effective and very inexpensive way to lower your 06. Let me know if you're interested.
 
Be aware that lowering the suspension also affects how far you can lean the bike over on tarmac.

I'm by no means a 'knee down rider' so assume it shouldnt really make a lot of difference to my riding :D
 
Go to sports direct. Buy a pair of muddy fox padded mountain bike shorts for £5.99.

Enjoy the comfort of a padded gusset.

Digger did a fantastic job on my low suspension GS seat, much more comfortable than the Sargent seat I had. If you are about this weekend you can have a look, I'm in Bristol but might be coming over that way for a blast on Sunday.:thumb
 
I didnt consider myself a fast rider until I got the GSA. Quite often a toe touches down and I'm doing at least 20mph more than I think I am. Even the standard suspension is streets ahead of normal bikes so you may too soon find the limits if the bike is lowered too much. Balls of feet down both side or one foot flat with other on footrest is enough. Any lower is no advantage for paddling it about and will seriously compromise the ground clearance. Also a flat seat is relatively wider so is more uncomfortable with minimal benefit on leg reach.

TBH its an example of why retractable landing gear should be used. There are always the jokes about (training wheels) stabilisers but we drive a Spitfire not a Sopwith Camel. OK, a Messershmitt BF109 not a Fokker Triplane.
