I'm looking to buy a GS but have had to have a lower seat on my RT to be comfortable what are the options for the GS (Wooden blocks not considered) I understand there is a lowering kit any idea of costs. Cheers
Ok....so you're two inches shorter than me and your inside leg is an inch shorter than mine at the very most. I've got a low seat fitted to my 1200 and I've got the rear preload set almost to maximum in order to get the bike to turn and paradoxically to make it more stable. I can just get both of my toes down at the same time.
With less preload you should be able to get the balls of your feet down on a 1200 with a low seat. I'd be inclined to try that before altering the ride height outside the stock parameters.
Ah - that shortens the arm by 15mm and thus raises the back of the bike.
What the OP wants (and me as well) is a longer arm to drop the height...

im 5' 9" high and 29" leg [dont ferking ask about my weight].
i ride a GS1100 with single seat[less hassle lifting legg over]as the pillion seat is higher than the riders.
yes its tall but ive got u/s arms and im ok even loaded for touring.ie 12 days=2500 miles across spain and portugal.
I'm 5'10" with a 29" inside leg. I can manage, but it might possibly help that the rear has sagged on my 1150. Or is this just confidence? Explains why I'm overweight for my height.........too much torso!
The only proper way to go is shorter suspension units. a friend of mine brought an 1150 adventure as he diden't fancy a 1200. However this was a bit of a problem with adverse camber at traffic lights, manole covers etc.
So, Ohlins units proved to be the (expensive) answer, the standard unit brought the ride height back to standard gs height, but on enquiry for another £80. they lowered the units down another inch and hey presto
perfect!, lot of miles since and no probs, notg sure about the centre stand belive a standard 1150 was fitted. Another aquaintance brought an 1150 from SLM's which belonged to a director of the parent company and that is really low but dont know what has happend but i can sit on it with my knees almost at 90degrees, suspension mods i would think with plenty of inside knowlege. So don.t give up on this height problem.

I'm only 5'7 and the lower seat option works OK, can't get both feet flat but bought the bike to ride on not stand on. The compromise with teh lower seat is that is not quite as flat topped as the higher one so on a long journey might not be as comfy but I won't know as I haven't got the taller one.
5' 9 an a bird seed here 29" inside leg. I have the Ohlins and a BM low seat
both feet flat on the road now. OH! sorry the Ohlins are the low setup 28mm
down on standard, i removed the centre stand and groung off the mounting
lugs, removed 1/2" from the tubes and re-welded the mounts. Perfik..
