Lowering centre stand

why would you want to lower it?

Fitted shorter shocks?

If it were me, I'd remove the centre stand and weld a bar across the bottom of the stand feet to retain alignment before cutting out a section of both stand legs below the crosspiece.

Once welded back together, remove the bar you first welded on & give it a coat of paint.

yep I've done it no problems.

I fitted 40mm lower Wilbers to 07 12GS so cut 40mm out of the lower portion of the legs (below the cross bar) and tig welded up and powder coated to match the original quality bumw finish lol.

I crashed my 1200 and now when I put it on the centre stand both wheels touch the ground :nenau

Seems to ride ok (now I've fixed the obviously broken bits).

I hope it's just a damaged centre stand - or you're parking on boggy ground.

Get it looked over, please.

Centrestand

On the 1100 & 1150 range, the centrestand was the most perfecly positioned stand ever fitted to a motorcycle, in that bike was easily put on & off, and stand was close to centre of gravity. On post 2007 GSes this is also true, but on other 1200 models & all earlier 1200GS, the centre stand is an abortion.
Bike is hard to get on, harder to get off, & too far back so bike is a bitch to do work round the front wheel.
BMW in their wisdom, ahd forgotten one of Murphy's Laws, namely:
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Just an aside before you do anything.

I have already given it several coats of looking at :)
Stand and the mounting points don't look damaged / bent.

Parked on concrete floor, same as it always was.

I've got the same setup on my 07 gsa i got a shorter side & center stand from bmw dealer .As you may have found on the side stand with lowered susp it left the bike to vertical & nearly fell over twice ,Thev'e been on a year great & no probs with putting on & off evan fully loaded.

If you have a 1200GS then I suspect it might be possible to get the BMW lowered stand (from the reduced seat height option) on it's own - so that you could use lowered aftermarket shocks with the BMW short stand.

No idea of part number though

Has anyone had the centre stand on a 1200 lowered ?

How is this done ?

Cut 50 mm out of both legs of mine, then welded back together. Found that the inside diameter of the legs is such that a 20 mm bolt (head sawn off) is a nice tight fit. I therefore put a bolt in side each leg, just in case (read "for when"!) my welding fails. For the side stand I simply removed 50 mm (vertically - it's more than 50 along the length of the tube) and re-welded the foot back onto the shortened tube. Had both stands powder coated for £15. PM me if you need more details

I've got Wilbers on my R1200GS, and can't get it on the stand. I didn't want to modify the stand as this would render it no good if the original shocks were refitted. You might want to try the following before you cannibalise the stand....

When I want to get the bike on the Centre Stand (which is not often), I have a piece of wood which store easily behind the little triangular plastic fillet on the right side under the fuel tank when I'm travelling. The piece of wood is 60mm X 35mm cross section and about 90mm long. Put it behind the rear wheel, back the bike onto the block of wood, and you've got enough height for the stand to operate as normal.

Good afternoon Dave,I have a 2012 1200 GS adventure and I am having Wilbers shocks fitted that will give me a 50mm height reduction.I have read what you have done and wondered if I carried out exactly the same procedure would all be well. Thanks for your help.Kind regards,Bob.

Take the centre stand off, the bike looks better for it and a paddock stand or wheel chock solves any servicing issues.
