Lowering Quest / Unwelcome grinding / Getting toes down / Touratech Extra Low Seat

The trouble with all this seat lowering is you are reducing the seat/footpeg distance making the bike less comfortable, just get a lowered GS and keep the standard ergos,
I have a 28" inside leg and love my factory lowered bike.

I have a kehado low seat, lowered pegs been on the bike since 2011, longest day in the seat was 7.5 hours, worked ok for me.

I had a low seat on my hexhead, as you say supercomfortable , i went to Strontian and bck with no problems :)

You have lowered both so will still have nearly std ergos, also that is not an LC so I don't know what the std ergos on your bike are like.

you can look and modify riding ergonomics to your hearts content.

My only problem with the lowered bike was the pegs were borderline too low lol

riding with the balls of my feet on the pegs made things a lot more comfortable

Well as the weathers nice,

I thought i'd revisit this

I took the seats off and made up a new seat using 15mm melamine ( all i had handy lol)

I used the rear seat locator bar as the back, and had to fit it using the fuse holder as the front stop

( i removed the small loom and tucked it out of the way )

This give me a new seat height of 740mm near on 29" which given i have an inside leg of 29"

I could get both balls of the foot on the deck :) and it felt like i was sitting in the bike not on it if that makes sense

so looking at my original measurements, i need to loose 40mm about another 1.5",

And slim the seat width to 240 - 270 270 we know already works

Question is, am i going to get another 1.5" out of the seat, and keep it long distance comfy

Would be handy if the OP could get some good pics and measurements up of the new seat :)

Yes lockable would be ideal, but when you need it, invariably there would be an object (dry-bag or tent ) over it. So lockable wouldn't be that much of an issue then.

But as you say, once you've dropped everything off, how would you keep the cover or plate in place ...

shame, it would save having to keep taking loads of parts on and off

This is what I fitted. It's lockable (via the plate stainless steel spigot AKA "nipple-proboscis" which firmly engages into the bikes pillion seat lock aperture / latch slot) and can released via the bike key in the same manner as removing the pillion seat. :thumb2

Please note:

1) For extra rigidity and security, I always ensure the plate is firmly held in place with dedicated ancillary webbing straps;

2) When touring, I affix short sacrificial (caravan awning) primary webbing loops to the dedicated plate slots and use these loops to attach my long secondary webbing straps.

Following this thread on, at the request of Oddjob, i thought i'd update

After modifying my stock low seat, and comparing it to the TT / Kahedo specs, i rekoned i was within 5mm of where the seat should be height wise,

But the lonh term longevity was unproven.

So i scoured evilbay to see if i could find an extra low version , but without the extra high pricing...

I missed one that was one there, as it to reached almost new pricing ?

then this one came up

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-R120...dySUbeYdZs%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc

Now the eagle eyed amongst you will be saying that's the low seat not the extra low, and you may be right ....

But, and here's the big (should it be low ;) ) and not big but.

Whilst the the description purports to being a low model

the part number on the seat is not a EU low version.

Both the TT UK and TT EU/UK websites show the low and ultra / extra low with a different part number

The Evil bay pictures show it to be more akin to an extralow seat & made by KAhedo

So where does the part number get you ...

Across the pond - to TT/ USA

And even then, the part numbers dont match .... but the pictures show that the seat is more aligned to extra low than low

So at this stage it's a bit of a unknown, it looks like an extra low , but may not be

It's described as a low, but may not be .

I'll know more when it arrives ...

If it is an extra low, i'm almost tempted to whip the cover off to get a map of the seat profile and then compare it to my own low attempt

Hi Santa,

Despite the serial number vagaries, it certainly looks like a TT / Kahedo Extra low; you managed to grab an absolute bargain! :beerjug:

I anticipate you'll receive by 18th / 19th May 2020. :banana

However, I would suggest you don't give due consideration to the removal of the seat covering as it's securely affixed to the foam with anaerobic glue and would consequently be extremely difficult to fettle and reattach. :nono

Ahh thanks for that,

The original OEM seat is just stapled , so i removed that and trimmed a load of foam off.

Its comfy and deffo lower, but i need to go back and trim some adhesive off which i can feel poking through

I'll let you know when it arrives

I take it the TT/KH is comfy on long journeys

Well it arrived :)

deffo ultra low seat, much firmer than the OE one, but scalloped much more toward the back & almost no foam at the front

I was more cautious in those areas, and left a lot of foam in there

I will give a few weeks trial and see if i like it better than the modded oe item

I put the 10mm lowering bungs on at the front as well

:)

That was a super quick delivery! I'm sure you'll be pleased with the TT / Kh extra-low and will achieve perfect ergonomics. :beerjug:
If in due course you sought to transition to the next LC iteration (1250), it'll also fit perfectly, so you're future proof.

Yes, I agree in comparison to the OEM BMW low seat, it will initially feel too firm. However, you'll find the profile is such that it doesn't cause any pressure points, aches, hence no numb bum. BTW, when I fitted my extra-low, I reverted back to the standard bobbins as my nether regions where pressing against the tank.

Have you had an opportunity to actually test your new seat on a ride-out?
I've not ridden since 22.03.2020 because Wales, (also NI and Scotland) will still be in full lock-down for the foreseeable future. :tears

Re the Nads , yes i noticed that, and the lack of padding in that area :eek

I tried the std bobbins and wasnt to sure, so have the low ones in, I might have a test ride over the next few days to see which works best.

I think the oem low seat foam is more for comfort than height.

If i dont like it, i dont think i'd have any problems moving it on ;) .. to a 1250 ;) (dont tempt me)

Ive managed 3 rides since early April when we went lockdown. Up up north better get its self into gear ,and unlock by Sept. I have a date with a very nice glen, & some

bloody good Chilli & some fellow tossers ;)

I had an extra low, non adjustable Kahedo seat fitted to my 2012 R1200 Triple black and it was a fantastic seat to do long rides on.
Bike now gone and seat is in the garage - any good to anybody? Send a pm if interested.
Sorry for jumping in on your thread :beerjug:
Any pics of the seat Hoff, condition is all good I assume. I've a hex head 1200GSA

What year hexhead?

they all had different seat heights for the GS & GSA

What seats have you tried on your hexhead? unless your super short , the Std low seat is a good start
