Just taken my '61 R1200GSA for a spin with its new Motorrad adjustable footpegs (more of them later) at their lowest setting and found [1] that the gear selector needed adjusting and [2] the brake pedal is way too high.

[1] was simple to deal with but [2] is a problem as getting my toe onto the pedal causes excrutiating pain on the front of my ankle.

According to http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=673961 it's not a case of twiddling the length of the push rod on the rear master cylinder.

So, has anyone else solved the problem of how to lower the brake pedal?

TIA

Richard

I'd recommend a brake pedal extender, had one on all my 1200's as the stock foot pedal seems too small for my plates.

i have the lowered foot pegs (the bm gold ones) tbh once you have adjusted the gear lever tip you get used to the rear brake position.as you say its not adjustable but it doesnt bother me now.brake pedal extender does nothing for this prob puk.

Nope, got the extender. All that does is make the pedal wider. Mine needs to go down by ~ 1" because lifting my toe high enough to reach the pedal causes frightful pain in the front on my ankle. In fact the lack of adjustment on the brake pedal was one of the reasons for getting rid of my ST1100 Pan European.

Hi Autogs

Yep same Gold pegs as you have. But I've just spent the day being chased by my IAM observer - so riding with full-on concentration - and the pain in my ankle was beyond belief. It's bad enough that I am, probably, going to have to re-set the pegs to stock height or re-fit the originals until I can find a solution. A real shame as I am going to Slovenia next Sunday but at least I know that I can wave my legs about when I suffer the knee pain from the standard pegs.

For the benefit of others, I've attached a few pics of the dramatic change in height that the BMW Gold pegs give. Also the bushes that I had machined to make the pegs fit the 2012 GSA to my satisfaction which, I think, make pegs sit slightly higher than on your machine.

Much too low enough. If you're riding quickly, are you not dragging the pegs a lot of the time....? :nenau

You mean that the pegs are too low? Possibly. My plan is to lift them one notch to see if that enables pain free riding.

Autogs, did you find them too low?

Richard

PS and before anyone accuses me of being a shorta**e, I'm 6'2" with 32" inside leg so I could do something towards solving these problems by raising the seat to its highest setting. However, I prefer, when the bike is fully loaded and carrying a pillion to have as much foot on the ground as possible.

I'd have thought so. I have enough trouble dragging my toes, even riding with the balls of my feet on the pegs, on the standard pegs, without the rubbers.

I would be getting a used brake lever off eBay and making an adjustable front end. 2 bolts and a slotted slide under the pedal end should do the job. A local garage can do any welding it might need.

NO WELDING ON THE BIKE of course.

That was our thought this morning. Not really feasible before next Sunday tho'

i had them grounding nicley two up on adverse cambers, but nothing violent all gradual,re the brake if it bothered me that much my plan was to buy a 2nd hand pedal cut a v shaped notch in it bend it down and reweld bth it doesnt cause me any bother.

That's a serious drop in height over standard pegs, probably worth reworking the brake pedal though. I also get aching knees so can understand the benefits, even though I'm only 5'11" with 29" inseam.

these pegs are a major step forward in comfort imo well worth fitting, with the seat on high and the pegs on the lowest setting the knee bend angle is very acceptable

Hi Adam

Aching knees was what sent me down the lower peg route.

I think that the AdvRider solution here:

may be viable, but not before I go away!

It's ludicrous that the brake pedal is without adjustment and I don't know why TT or Wunderlich haven't seized the opportunity to part us from more money.

Having said that, I took an '11 plate Pan European for a spin this afternoon. TBH I now can't understand why I bought the GSA :blast

I got a set of wunderlich lowered footpegs and the kit came with alternative parts for lowering the brake lever. I decided I didn't need it as the setting is right for me. The wunderlich kit lowers the pegs by an inch, has made a definite improvement.

What extra bits did they supply? A photo would be great

TIA

Will have to think about that, cos when I come to sell them on I won't have the full kit, however that won't be for a couple of years or so (hopefully).

Quite understand.

If you do reach a conclusion either way could you send me a PM?

However, it's unlikely that I will be able to acknowledge any message between 14 - 24 September as I will be battling with the new pegs in Slovenia :-)
