Hi All,

just migrated from a 1150gs to a 2010 1200gs twincam. problem is, the 1200 did not come with any luggage. I have my own givi topbox, and generally am happy with givi luggage, but what do you guys recommend in terms of luggage?

Weekend away - Kriega US20 or US30
Week away - Kriega OS32 Soft Panniers
2 Weeks away - BMW Aluminium Panniers and Kriega KS40 Pannier Bags

I just realised I am a Kriega whore :D

thanks for the heads up. I had not evaluated soft panniers...

i guess it makes the bike lighter, but you cannot lock them?

Looking at givi panniers now (one of the aluminum ones)

Can any owners on here tell me if both sides are the same size and if possible post up any photos of the bike from the back. I am concerned about whether the bike is symmetrical because of the exhaust and whether this changes the behavior of the bike?
thanks

People have put same size Givi panniers on in the past and the near side sticks out way more than the offside due to the exhaust. The BMW (aluminium & plastic) panniers (and some makes) have a cut out for the exhaust so although smaller, keep the width reasonable and equal both sides
For a 250kg bike, plus kit, plus rider I can't see an extra 5kg for hard over soft luggage is really an issue. People often cite soft luggage as the answer when they intend going off road as it is far less likely to leave you with an issue if you drop the bike (Bent out of shape metal panniers etc)
I've had both the Vario plastic cases (great ingenuity to create a fairly narrow case that can then be opened out for more capacity (and width)) and ally boxes. For ease, the ally boxes trump the varios IMHO.

Vario panniers for me, waterproof, secure, expandable, and they keep the bike slim enough for filtering through traffic when commuting.

Some manufacturers offer a narrow case for the LHS.

On the GSA right side you have 115mm between the inside of the pannier frame and the tyre. I used the space to carry an emergency fuel can - very handy when you have a w**k fuel gauge.

On the left, there's there's enough space to fit a 100mm wide exhaust can as long as it's set parallel to the tyre. Most pipes are angled and the OEM can is very wide. Such a setup would need a special link pipe so talk to a bike exhaust specialist.

The Givi cases are well made even the plastic "Trekker" style, but impact damage is glaringly obvious.

You could make your own luggage with flight case components. How about these?

Or search "flight case hardware" and "flight case extrusions" to make your own cases.
