Having experienced a small amount of a wobble through the handlebars I had the Ultraseal removed and my front wheel balanced. When refitting the wheel I noticed 4 small bulges on one side of the tyre wall covering a range from 12 o'clock to 4 o'clock. I assumed that these were responsible for the wobble.

The tyre's been returned to Metzeler for inspection which I've been advised will take some time. I was wondering if anyone's experienced anything similar and what the outcome was.

Thanks

Hi had a number of Metzeler tyre's on my 12 ADV and never had any problems like that and also use Ultraseal. May be just one in a batch and you the unlucky person to have ended up with it.
There may be some one along in minute, who can help you more :nenau
Hope all gets sorted :thumb2

Is it a new front? I've always had problems with bar wobble on a new front, particularly under engine braking. They settle down when worn slightly.

Really?? I've never had that in over 25 years of biking!

I have had a bad experience with ultraseal though and wouldn't use it again. Very bad front end shake at high speed which was cured when the ultra seal was taken out.

I had deep sidewall cracking on both sidewalls of my front Metzeler Tourance a couple of years ago.

Tyre returned to Metzeler Pirelli via my local agent, eventually a credit made for 65% of the cost of replacement due to the wear left on the tyre.

No explanation given as to the cause of the problem ( probably not willing to admit to a problem with the materials used or construction process ).

Always used Tourances (non EXP) and only one bad tyre so most likely a one-off fault.

etc. etc. loads of refernces if you search.

Don't know about ultraseal...........never liked the idea of punctures going undetected. Prefer just to fix the puncture.

I had this happen to me on at least two occasions around 8 years ago, both front Tourances which developed radial cracks between the tread blocks on each side of the tyre, some up to 5cm in length, but always worse on the left side. Never got any interest in the problem from Metzeler so stopped using them and have run road tyres ever since, best decision I've made!

Any bulges or deformitys in tyres .........get some new ones.....you carnt get away with a sudden deflation on a bike like you could in a car

Like other folk say dont use them internal sealants:thumb

Thanks for all the replies but so far no one seens to have experienced this lumpy tyre wall thing.

The current state of play is that my 'specialist' bike tyre outfit that fitted the tyre returned it to their supplier a month ago. They are now waiting for Metzeler to collect it for inspection so this isn't going to be speedy process. I've now asked for a new tyre to be fitted at my cost and once I get a response from Metzeler I'll recieve a refund, probably partial, if appropriate. The problem is, the Tourance tyre's only six months old, has covered around
2000 miles and has no other wall damage. I'll report on the outcome when I eventually get it.

This thread's also thrown up some interesting feedback on the use of puncture sealing products. Whilst this is somewhat off topic, I'd like to add that I'm pretty sure that Ultraseal saved my bacon when I ended up with a decent size hole in my rear tyre whilst doing around 90 in the fast lane of the M1. I felt a minor wobble as if the wind had caught me which got my attention. When it happened again I realised something wasn't right and started to move over to the hard shoulder. This only took around 20 seconds but by the time I got there it was much worse. When I got off the bike there was Ultraseal everywhere and a very flat rear tyre. Had it not been for the Ultraseal, the rapid deflation as speed could have been pretty scary.

It was probably the speed that kept the rear wheel up, rather than the ultraseal. Slowing on the hard shoulder would allow it to run flat. I've done a fair few miles at speed on virtually flat tyres - not recommended mind as they can pop off the rim.

Anyway, isn't the ultraseal meant to keep it inflated?

It's my understanding the Ultraseal can only cope with holes up to a certain size. The one in my tyre was pretty large.

I'm not entirely sure if it was the speed that kept the tyre up as the wobble gradually increased whilst moving across the lanes at around 70. My thoughts are that the Ultraseal was gradually forced out of the hole which slowed the deflation. Once it had gone the tyre was flat but fortunately I was at the hard shoulder by that time.

Lumpy Metzeler, 100% refund

Thanks to all who contributed to my lumpy tyre issue. I've just had a letter from the supplier and they're giving me a 100% credit towards a replacement. There's no admission of liability of course.

A few years back DrAlf had a massive lump on the tread of a front tourance whilst the two of us were out hooning around essex. I noticed it when we parked up for a breather. It was about 8" long and 2-3" wide.
It's not the only tourance I have seen do it, but by far the worst.

Metzeler with cracks in front tyres x 2

I have fallen from my bike without reason, slow car park. front wheel went from under bike. On close inspection, cracks along the wall of front tyre. Returned tyre, got repalcement and now after 4000 km, same issue with same make of Metzeler. Anybody hear of Metzeler remoulding/rethreading tyres
