It will chaos so avoid the area if you can. I will be lucky to even get out of my house as we are close to the diversion route. Might affect the M5 as well.

If I was heading to the West Country from the Midlands or North I would go down the M50/A40/A449 to meet the M4 at Newport, then go over the Severn Crossing to the M49/M5 and over the Avon Bridge.

"The M4 will be closed in both directions between junctions 18 and 19 from 7pm Friday 18 October to 6am Monday 21 October "

Think we might go away for the weekend.

Wouldn’t it be easier to go straight down the M5 as the closure and diversion is between the J19 (M32) and J18 (Bath)

No. The M5 is congested on a normal weekend with people heading to the M32 and Cribbs Causeway. Just imagine what the M5/M4 junction will be like with traffic coming from S.Wales wanting to get towards Swindon but having to come off at the M32 to get on your diversion. You stand a better chance of unhindered progress past Bristol by turning off the new M4 Severn Crossing onto the M49 past Avonmouth, joining the M5 near the Avon Bridge.

Probably quicker to swim, if you get the tide right.

The M5 around Bristol is always busy but an October weekend will be more or less situation normal, IMO not enough to justify a diversion like the one you’ve suggested.

Saying that, I’ve been wrong before and I won’t be on it so it matters not.
