M6 or M1 south to Tunnel

What time you leave home is all but irrelevant, it’s what time you hoon down the M1 or M11 or whichever road(s) you take to arrive (and at what time) on the M25 that is relevant, as it might dictate what the traffic might be like.

I drive on the M25 quite often, either anti-clockwise from London E1 to the M1 or M40 or M11 or A1 or clockwise to the QE2 crossing at Dartford or on a short hop from the A2 to the M20. It is not so full of horrors as people dream it up to be. Yes, there can be hold-ups. Yes, there can be a queues at QE2 bridge or the tunnel but outside of the rush hours, things are usually reasonably free flowing.

For a long while, the the M25 has had long 50 mph speed restrictions, whilst the apparently tested something or other. These are no great inconvenience. Whether the restrictions have been lifted in the past month or so, I don’t know,

My advice? Toss a coin or better still, ask Google when you leave home. That though will give you its best shot at 07:00 AM…. Things might change…but that’s Adventure (with a capital A) biking for you…. Life on a knife edge in the 21st century.

Enjoy your holiday.

Depends on what time of day you’re doing it. The M1 isn’t that bad now with roadworks , just beware though that they have switched a lot of the speed cameras on the gantries on. You could take that down to Jnct 19 the A14 and use that to meet up with the M11 and M25. Or go across the 62 to Ferrybridge and use the A1 south. The roadworks at Darrington are a pain but you’ll filter through the traffic.
I do Darlington to Milton Keynes most days In and artic and the A1, M1 question is a constant question when I set off

I'd leave at 8 at and miss the congestion at Leeds by the time you get there.

M62 east then A1 south. Much easier and loads more places to stop for a break. On to the A14 then M11 to the M25. Round that, M2, A2 and job done. :thumb2

I came down from Scotland and took the channel tunnel 10 days ago (just got back today). I took the M6/M6 Toll, had to filter a fair but due to shocking traffic around Manchester etc as per. The toll is a must imo! Costs a fiver, no cameras and you get to have a racing line start at the barrier. Bargain.

Stayed at my Brother's in the midlands and then took the M1/M25/M20 etc. Didn't really have any issues. On my way back it was a bit busy at the Dartford crossing and Birmingham/Manchester but not too bad. It's a long old slog either way but needs must. Just be prepared to change route if Google Maps says folk have crashed etc.

The pointless “system test” 50mph restrictions (J8-J5) have now been lifted if you end up on the south loop.

edit: just seen you’ve decided on M11, so ignore me

Oh thank fuck! What a frigging stupid idea that was! Whoever dreamt that one up needs a massive slap!

M6-M5-M42-M25

just drive the M1 and it was the usual shit near junction 10-7 variable speed limit and then rubbish till M25
