I had the MAM cylinder head protectors and fender extender on my last GS, and was very happy with them.

Fitted the same kit to the RT today.

MAM is really beautifully engineered stuff.

I have seen a video of the MAM owner dropping his GS onto a concrete floor to prove how good his protectors are....that's what I call confidence in one's product!

I use them on the RS but some things they might not prevent in a drop is the indicators snapping off, scratches to the exhaust and rear drive maybe, which bars would protect. My mate dropped his 1250RS and as I helped him up, I noticed what was close to the deck and what wasn't. His bars resulted in not a scratch to anything other than the bars! I reckon his rear indicator would have been toast without them. Still, an indicator is relatively cheap to replace, the bars a lot more expensive. The MAM covers are pretty neat though.

Getting back to RTs for a moment....... I dropped my RT when stationary (not using sidecases to help filtering) with just head guards and put a hole in the rear LED light cluster. £200 later ......

The next RT was fitted with crash bars. Bars and a slight graze to the rear pannier were all that resulted from the next 3 mph drop.

A bit off topic, sort of, but never mind. I had SW Motech bars on both my 1200 GS' and dropped the 1st one twice. As the bars were black a bit of a file, some car filler and some satin black and you couldn't see where they'd been damaged the rest of the bike was undamaged. Fast forward to the 1250GS and as I'd not dropped the previous one I decided to try the Machine Art X heads as the bars from tbe 1200 woukdn't fit. The X heads are far easier to fit, though I can't say how they'd fair if you do drop the bike, but then again their main purpose of them is to protect the heads, not the platic. Personally I don't like the look of the engine bars on the RS but as ever you pays your money.

If you tell us exactly how the bike is going to be dropped, then we will be able to tell you whether just head guards will be sufficient :D

I don't like the look of crash bars either, so I must learn how to avoid dropping the bike in future.
