I am doing a MachineArtMoto (MAM) and Maier Rar Mud Guard Comparison.

In price, the MAM is $149: Link

The Maier is $61: Link

You may be able to find them a bit cheaper, but not much.

First, an off the bike, side by side look:

The MAM is both longer and more precision molded, plus of thicker material.

Appearance wise the MAM is a bit ahead with the sharper lines and clean look, plus the logo, if you like that, painted on instead of a sticker. You pay for the quality appearance.

The Maier, on the other hand, has a slightly thinner material, rounder lines, and a removable sticker if you like no markings. Price is less than half the MAM.

Installed, the MAM:

Note, if installed with some luggage systems, in this case Jesse, the MAM and Maier will fit, but be slightly offset causing the MAM to touch the lower forward swingarm.

Installed MAIER (shown installed on the GSAw, but later transferred to a GSw:

No clearance issues:

So, how do they work?

MAM on a 2015 R1200GSAw with low miles and some salt and a tiny bit of dirt riding:

Notice the shock and components forward of the MAM are pretty clean.

The Maier:

Same thing.

In case you think I am overselling the Maier, this was the back of the bike:

More testing, in muddier conditions, to follow. Feel free to show us what you have.

The Maier looks a sensible priced product, anywhere we can buy it from in the UK?

Jim, does the shorter Maier let much in below it? Also I know you went wit this, any regrets or totally happy with it?

I cant find anywhere in the UK either.

I do not know if you can buy it directly in the UK, but it is available on E-bay.

I can't, so far, see any significant difference between the Maier and the MAM for performance, but we are still testing. My gut says any difference will be minor.

I have been speaking to Mike at SportTouring, and he is ordering some of the Maier ones from the States. They will be in stock in a few weeks.

Regards Mark

fitted the mudsling this morning, very well made and offers excellent protection plus a doddle to fit, got the llimberger carbon hugger as well and no problems with both fitted:D it is overpriced, NN do a deal for both MAM front and rear for £150 which is a good deal, when you sell the bike the Mudsling will sell easy for £100 on here so in a sense, its a bargain

I'd be interested if it is available in the UK - eBay ad is approx £80 plus duty and VAT and you're nearly at £100, plus you have to wait for it to get here from the US. At that price the MAM looks a good bet.

sorry about the crap photo:blast but this is what it looks like with the hugger

Not sure if you saw the other post in here regarding damage to the swingarm caused by the Maier. Myself and another rider have the same issue where the Maier touches the swingarm and rubbed the paint off to bare metal.

Have you checked your swingarm for damage?

Here what mine looks like:

After 2,000 miles on a BMW R1200GS LC

Found that the MAIER catches on the swingingarm:

Bought Mudsling instead......

That's what happens when you try and buy a cheap imitation of the real thing.:rob

I think some of these producta do have an element of premium / over-pricing (MAM, Ilmberger etc.) but when you assess that against the potential replacement costs of the items you are protecting then it's a clear cut case of You-get-what-you-pay-for.

The Dutch have a nice aphorism which roughly translates as "He who tries to get the last drop of cream from the pot will end up with the lid on his nose"

Bloody shame we have to buy all this "tat" for our bikes...when they should be designed properly in the first place - with a proper manufacturer mudguard on F and R .

AVOID the Maier, it is not fit for purpose. I had the same problem as Advancedbiker; despite correct fitting it rubbed the paint off the swing arm on my 2014 LC. Also, it doesn't keep the crap off the bike as well as the Mudsling. I binned the Maier in disgust; with hindsight I should have "kicked off" with Maier, a very poor design for the LC bikes.
