Hel-lup!!!!!

Wife's laptop (Samsung P28, 2 years old, not full of rubbish, 1500MHz, 228MB (not 256MB for some reason), 30GB HD) takes FOREVER to start up, even when "Resume"ing form standby.

The HD light is permanently lit for the first 8 minutes. Task Manager (when it finally loads) shows System Idle 98%+, no other significant items running.

I suspect the AV is disk-paging like mad, plus downloading updates etc. but 8 minutes before it'll respond is wrong, wrong, wrong.

I'm waiting for a 1GB RAM upgrade to arrive which I hope will be the magic cure.

I've reloaded the AV (F-Secure) and bought RegCure and run that (1183 errors fixed!) to no avail.

Any clues, please?

Success in this arena will get SWMBO very happy (and by inference me too!)

Cheers all

The ram might help a little, but that will just be disguising the problem.

do START>RUN> and type in 'MSCONFIG' (without the quotes)

Then have a play.......start by disabling everything apart from MS products or disabling everything full stop...then you can look up what the other things are, enable them one by one from start up and that should tell you what it is that's slowing things down so much.

There's other stuff to try as well but that might sort it with a bit of patience :)

PS sorry if this is obvious, but disable everything then reboot .........I bet it'll star a lot quicker, but if it doesn't, it's most likely a physical problem or maybe a disk full/ virtual memory issue.

Start as above though :)

Microsoft update?

If by any chance you have the automatic Microsoft Update installed, get rid of it! Knackered evry machine I used it on and I didn't know what was ahppening... Found the answer on a web forum and haven't looked back. Disable it and just use the manual WINDOWS Update, rather than the MICROSOFT one. Might be your problem...

Thanks to all

Well the 1GB upgrade arrived; 2 minutes later calm is restored.

Must have been the AV pagefiling like mad, anyway it's OK so I won't fix it more at the moment!

Thanks all
