Right people we have started a poll on whether YOU want hi-viz or not.
The RSA has stated that if they get 70% compliance with wearing of hi viz, then they won't make it compulsory.
If they don't they will make the wearing of a full sleeved for rider and pillion compulsory.

We know some people are totally opposed and some people are totally for.

We want to know what you as riders want so please spread the word

I always wear my hi-viz jacket... mostly because car drivers associate the colour with irish police and a possible speed check. And even if it only raises the chance that they see me by 1% then I will wear it, as bikers we are very vulnerable on the road.. and we need every protection that we can get from other road users who are not giving the road their full attention.
I cant see driving standards getting better, in fact as more gadgets get introduced into the car (iPhone mp3, GPS etc) I think it is getting worse.. people are choosing music tracks, texting.. entering co-ordinates into GPS units.. everything but focusing on driving.

but as essjay said.. to each his/her own. There is no way it should be complusory..
 
How are they going to monitor the 70% compliance. Complete and utter crap. As usual an Irish solution. What kind of an ar*ehole came up with that suggestion. And we pay these idiots good money to write this crap.

Anyway, rant over.
 
I insure the cops here in Ireland. Hi viz jackets dont stop motorists knocking down traffic bikers while they are on big white bikes :rob. You would not believe some of reports we get in after accidents. :eek:
 
This proposal must be fought with every possible means.

It has nothing to do with our safety because we can still ride around in shorts and runners. We need to take a leaf out of the books of the French and cause major disruption in order to have our opinion respected.

What's the demo about, Marc????

There's a request to demonstrate on the link above but there's no reason given.

There is one mention of getting people to think bike.
How will a demonstration help the "Think Bike" campaign?
More like "Think Bikers are a pain" campaign.

If I'm to demonstrate, I'd want something more urgent and specific than..."I ride a bike. Think of me"


Re the Hi-Vis, I agree with most posters. Good idea but shouldn't be compulsory.
 
If the wearing condoms was compulsory in brothels would ya stop going, or slip one on and continue to enjoy the ride:D:D
 
Feckin no - double no - sorry but we'll get hit no matter what. They just dont see us. And I know I'm on the mainland but fekit. Its the same the world over.
 
I've spoken in the past with people who have sat on the Home Office Conspicuity Committee regarding hi viz (both personal and vehicular) and to be honest it is more of a back covering exercise for when it all goes horribly wrong and litigation begins over personal injuries (you wear high viz and have lots of reflective bits and bar lights on your vehicles your compensation will not be halved).


It does not matter how much hi viz you wear or how reflectively marked or well illuminated your vehicle is with blue/amber beacons etc if someone isn't looking they will either pull out in front of you or run into the back of you.

Over the years I've seen RTC's including one where someone pulled out in front of a fire service turntable ladder on a blues and two's run (it was the size of an bloody artic, it was dark and it could be seen from miles away with the amounts of lights it had fitted) and I've also seen where a car drove into the back of a stationary and illuminated mobile crash cushion (the thing was mounted on the rear of a truck and lit up by 6 huge flashing amber lights and was easily visible from well over a mile away on a straight stretch of dual carriageway).

We have the same number of vehicles written off at the scenes of accidents now as we did in the mid eighties when instead of high bar lights and flashing rear vehicle lights they had one piddly centrally mounted beacon.

It is not high viz wearing that should be legislated for but better driver training and much heavier fines and penalties for the people who don't look.
 
Did anyone notice the date on MAG's "Position Statement"? 13th February 2011.

And they have only had 188 votes on their poll ...

(I wear hi-viz jacket and helmet, but that's my choice ... and that's the way it should stay.)
