There is a suggestion in a thread in the German section of a sub-section for routes that appear in magazines, along with a question about how to access the magazines.
Here’s my tuppence worth:
Most of the route suggestions come from: magazines, dedicated websites, hotels and just simple posts in forums, such as UKGSer. By their nature, these can cover anywhere from Finland to the bottom of Portugal and beyond. On UKGSer we have taken the pragmatic step of dividing the globe up; it would maybe be a backward step to put route suggestions into one block together.
Most of the good ‘route suggestion’ magazines are German. Rather than take out several costly subscriptions, I access most of them through a blanket subscription to Readly. This embraces:
Motorrad
Motorrad News
Motorrad Magazin
Touren Fahrer
Alpentourer
Motorrad Strassen
Of these the ‘best for route suggestions’ are: Motorrad, Touren Fahrer, Alpentourer and Motorrad Strassen.
I then take out an annual subscription to the German Ride quarterly, which is an offshoot of Motorrad magazine.
I could probably access some of them for free by finding their website (for instance Touren Fahrer) but I’d rather pay a couple of quid to Readly to have them all in one place. I did manage to hack Ride’s past issues webpages.
I don’t speak German but a route is a route, a map is a map and a GPX download is a GPX download. If I really want to read it, I run the article through a translation app.
For the websites and hotels, there are umpteen of them, best discovered by a Google search, using a bit of imagination as to the search phrase(s) used to set Google looking.
If I (and others) trip over a possibly interesting website or article, I / we usually create a post about it, putting it into the relevant country. I have also taken up taking screen shots and / or downloads. Why? Because websites and magazines close or are not maintained.
Are the route suggestions always perfect? No, of course not. You’ll always get the “But that misses out the B123 from ABC to DEF!”. Sometimes the route suggestions in an article are themed. For instance, Castles or canals or rivers or former mining areas…. There are as many themes as there are places.
Does it take time and effort to post the suggestions? Yes, if it is to be done neatly (hopefully interestingly) and be something more than a single line Google link.
An article in the latest edition of Motorrad magazine, prompted me to look a bit further into this little visited part of Germany.
In my tapping around in Google, I came across the German Fairytale Route, which looks as if it might make an interesting alternative to just “Do the Black Forest, mate”.
This was the article in the magazine. I have missed out the words, as they are all in foreign, but the pictures and the map work well:
