Maier splashguard

Do you need to remove the OEM shock protection when installing a Maier splashguard ?

I think they can keep there plastic part :mad:

OK, I've done a search and read up about these things but I still can't tell whether one of these or a hugger is best for keeping the crud off me as well as the shock?

From March onwards I'll use the bike (1200GS) a lot for commuting so it's a pain if my trousers are constantly muddy etc. I had a Motorrad Concepts hugger on my previous 1200GS which was OK but still didn't do that great a job.

Is one of these better then? Why / how? And, most importantly then, can I still get one of the group deal ones from Val???

I had a Motorrad Concept Hugger on my 2005 model, which developed cracks at the fixings after some 60000km.
So I bought a Wunderlich inner fender, which is about the same as a mudsling, and has done some 80000km now.

This inner fender/mudsling is further away from the rear tyre, so the rear exhaust gets sprayed more, but my legs are not exposed at all. I'm guessing that's because a mudsling covers the open triangle in the rear frame. A mudsling's advantage over any hugger is that it doesn't influence handling in a negative way by increasing unsprung weight. The mudsling doesn't rattle since it's fixed on the frame. If you're doing some off roading then there's less risk of a mudsling becoming clogged with mud (always compared to a hugger).

IMHO an inner fender/mudsling is a 'must buy'. :thumb2

I agree with GSband 'below' I had a pyramid hugger when they first came out in 2005.
After fitting it (it didn't fit well either) I took it for a test hoping for great things. I had at the time a long 1/4 mile drive and by the time I got to the road I was very worried about the paint on the swing arm as the hugger was clattering like a demented woodpecker.
Took the thing off straight away and sent it back. I couldn't afford the Wunderlich version and didn't think it would be that good anyway, so I've never bothered since. Just got used to the muddy left boot etc.

Now I'm bringing in the Maier Splash Guards I will be fitting one and will be able to say just how good or bad it is, though I'm guessing it is just as good as the more expensive alternatives, which I've never been able to justify either.

Unfortunately I sold all the first batch of 1200 guards before I realised I didn't order one for myself :blast So I too will have to wait and see.

I have now ordered a mudsling,on/off button for aux lights and a tap in cabel for the parking light from http://www.cyclenutz.com/ .
The total was 141,55$ including shippment to Sweden.
The mudsling was 52$
If the customs stop´s the package i have to pay VAT but there are no customsfee if the value is below 140€ :)

Mudslinging and some frame infills by pyramid work best for me and makes the bike look finished under the seat inmho.

Hi Val - are you getting anymore of the Maier Splash Guards in? - I'd be interested in one for my 2012 GSA .......with ESA if it makes any difference
