Do all you folk who ride on main beam enjoy being dazzled? no probably not, then have a heart and think about other road users.
When a car driver veers into your lane cos he has been blinded dont come crying to the forum complaining of another SMIDNSY the trouble was he did now he cant.

IMHO there is enough aggressive drivers out there for me to want to avoid raising their aggression higher by giving them a dose of 'main' beam. I mean, wouldn't we all be pissed off if everyone rode/drove round dazzling
us?
For me, its dipped beam all day, added to by driving lights that are angled down, accompanied by a cast iron conviction that 'they are ALL out to get me' - and ride accordingly............

I have found many more drivers on my daily city commute see me with the lights on than without. Its probably all irrelevant anyway as I believe that all officially sold new bikes and cars will have lights on all the time from the end of this year anyway.
Mark, Lights on all the time is OK, the question is ' should they be on dipped or main beam?'
even the new bikes that are wired in such a way that the lights are allways on have a main/dip switch

I find switching the hazard lights on is an excellent way to part the waves when filtering !Gecko said:

Lights and Eurotunnel
My '03 GS has the lights (dipped beam) hard wired. Eurotunnel are very insistent that you turn off your lights when you enter the train carriage. Don't know whether there are safety reasons or whether it is for the comfort of their staff.
I'm about to use Eurotunnel with the bike for the first time. Wonder how I'll get on? Anyone had any experience of this?
Similar problem to approachign army bases, I s'pose, except I don't think the Eurotunnel staff will shoot me.

Not sure of the laws in the UK but in the States many are using the PathBlazer by Kizantech headlight modulator (as I do here in SA) and that can be wired to high or low beam and certainly works VERY well at making you more visible... also 'parts the sea' on occassion!

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but I have noticed the headlamps are not that good on the 1150, after trying 100w bulbs and not impressed (plus Mr plod not impressed) Whats the best sort of additional lamps to add on to make life better?

I've seen somewhere a 'dim-dip' device that runs 20 - 25% power through dipped headlight, as per many cars, does nayone know who supplies this?
I use headlights in marginal light conditions, headlights in the dark and/or poor weather as well as occasionally when filtering & high speed (motorway). My concern is that although making me more conspicuous, the brightness masks the outline of the bike, making it more difficult to gauge approaching speed - the last thing I want is some twonk seeing me, but thinking I'm only approaching/overatking him/her slowly, so they have time to pull out...............

This whole lights issue is I think bollox!!!!!!
You can be the most visible person in the world, but only if they look.
Why not ride on the defensive and make sure every person on earth knows you are there. It works for me!!!!!!!!!

main beam
Roughly split 50/50 at the moment,and yet............................
At Princetown recently where there were more than a couple of GS's I saw no bikes on main beam

I did see one-retroman put his main beam on "in an attempt to burn off some condensation within the lamp"

Not me..
I cant run with Main Beams on. as that would mean i would have my FF75s on as well. TOO Bright!..
I do however put my Micro De fogs on now and then.. if a bit of a dull day.

Me too, I 've found when travling up the m/way, with ff50's and main beam on, between lanes, traffic in both lanes move over, its like parting the red sea, driving think you are a copper or something!.......... it's greatGecko said:

Yesterday, whilst travelling east along the A31 (heavy traffic in both directions), I was on a wide section of road where they have put hatching surrounded by dashed lines down the middle of the road to separate the lanes. I was merrily making my way down this centre section when I noticed in the distance a bright light coming towards me, thinking it was the offside headlight of a car on high beam I continued down the centre of the road. Suddenly I realised it was another motorbike with its headlights on main beam also travelling down the centre of the road, I moved over pronto.
The problem I found was that I could not see the bike, I could see the bright light, even when I had realised it was another bike I found it difficult to see anything other than the light. On a motorway to encourage cars to move over is one thing, in heavy traffic no – dangerous

M27 on the south coast, when filtering between the middle & outside lane, sometimes use main beam and waggle the bars, day & night, hopefully this is seen as a flashing light & makes them more aware. When someone moves over, I always nod at them. Whether they actually see this I don't know.
