Hi Chaps,

Asked my local BMW dealer for a quote for a 42,000 mile service on my 1150 GSA. (I still have extended BMW warrantee)

They will replace:-

1/ Engine oil and filter.

2/ Fuel and Air filter.

3/ Clutch fluid

4/ Generator belt

5/ Spark plugs

and they have quoted ................£620.00 inc vat :eek:

Any thoughts :nenau

Yep do it yourself . All fairly easy to do , it's all on here . Failing that use an independent like steptoe . The 1150's are pretty easy to work on with a good manual . I would not be taking a 1150 to a main dealer . I'll do it for £500 :D.

Just because it has extended warrantee does not mean it has to be BMW serviced surely ?

get a local independent to do it,and use genuine parts and your extended warranty should still stand.

RGM in Croston near Preston if you really are a mechanical numpty. Otherwise do it yourself for less than 100quid.

A 42K mile service should NOT require a fuel filter, air filter, generator/alternator belt or spark plugs...

Just what I thought

Engine Oil and filter

Valves

Brake and Clutch fluid, if it hasn't been done for a few years

Maybe Gearbox and Final Drive oils, again if they haven't been done for a while or you're fussy

pray tell that you also thought about this and realised that it is a massive RIPOFF...NAME THE DEALER or your bike is in a bad way....

All of the above!

Read up on things, everything you need to know and more is in here somewhere and the 'main' servicing is very straightforward...and get yourself a Clymer manual.

Save your money for trips, tyres, farkles....and beer :D

Maybe there should be a 'name and shame' forum section?

How are the BMW mechanics going to feed their families if people don't use them to service their bikes? :nenau

If you joined 'The BMW Club' you might get a 20% discount if your dealer is part of the scheme. That would save you a fair chunk of the cost. :nenau

No it does not. Yes when initial 2 year period but extended period is more like an insurence policy. I know this cos I checked. JJH

Yep put £500 back in your account, and get your hands dirty.

My guess would be Chester BMW, But there again I hold my hand up, and I have been known too be wrong once, or maybe twice before. :blast

Silly Price

Just completed the service on my 1100 rt took longer than expected due to trouble getting the throtle bodies to sync, started to think if it was time that I let someone else do the work and save my time however reading this £600 for a service no way.

I am sure that you will be able to have it done cheaper but for me I will stick with taking a day off my annual leave, at least I know what has been done but that another story

So, I take you have to get a dealer service stamp for the warranty to remain valid? Just how many months warranty do you have left and is it really worth paying over the odds for?

Might just be worth getting an independent inspection of the bike (from someone who knows their stuff) to see if there are any major underlying impending problems, I know that components can fail without any prior warning but someone could check over the more obvious common issues and set your mind at ease?
Please excuse my limited geography of your area but Steptoe seems to know what he's talking about , maybe too far away though?

Hi All,

Many thanks for all your comments and advice so far :beerjug:

I have spoken to BMW and established that regarding the BMW used bike extended warranty:-

I am able to have my bike serviced by any reputable independent mechanic and the warrantee will be fine, so long as genuine BMW parts are used.

Clearly this will now enable me to get far more competitive quotes for the servicing without fear of loosing the Warranty.

(I do a lot of long European trips mostly solo and value the peace of mind of full BMW warrantee and breakdown recovery)

Just to clarify my bike is a 2005 R1150 GSA SE. and has full main dealer service history from new and is in really nice condition and

therefore it should be a straight forward servicing proposal :thumb

Cheers
