Is this something new with main dealers ?? Anything to do with BMW ??

Anyone from the North West already knows that Halliwell Jones are complete sharks in all ways and best avoided for anything service related. (Although I did buy a bike there and they weren't that bad to be fair).

I'm a member of a club in North Wales. We have ex Aerospace engineers, F1 race techs, bike builders and all ranks of top flight engineers in our ranks. We're old bastards but we know our way around a machine and we have workshops to rival any.

One of our chaps had a sensor failure on his 1200. Nothing serious. Just a £80 sensor. We diagnosed the fault using our GS911. Double checked it with a scope. And we grabbed the part number off RealOEM. And then called our local stealership. Halliwell Jones.

Would they buggery just take a payment and order the part. They wanted to "Book me in for diagnosis" at £160PH. Because they "Didn't feel comfortable selling parts that unqualified people could be fitting". And they wouldn't even say how many hours labour they would charge.

PISS OFF !!!! They can't do an oil change without leaving half the bike in pieces before handing it back. The horror stories and nightmare tales you hear from customers there would keep you up at night.

Is this a new thing from BMW ? Or another sales scam from the worst car dealer that decided to sell bikes.

It shouldn't really matter to them, as long as they know they didn't fit the parts or make the diagnosis, there's no come back on them.

Unless, you fit the parts, then the owner gets a fault and denies having the part fitted by someone else but tries to maintain it was the original part fitted at manufacture??

Nope. It was none of that.

He just phoned up asking to order a part. With the part number. With his credit card in hand. And ready to collect it when it was in stock.

They're obviously on a script. He had to jump though hoops giving them all his details about the bike, service history, etc. Then they tried to sell him a service and then book him in for diagnosis.

He is a very calm man. He endlessly said "I JUST WANT TO BUY THE PART PLEASE"

After the endless questionnaires, interrogations and treacherous sales strategies, he hung up and bought it mail order from Germany.

I said I would ask in this forum if this is common practice with all dealerships.

Might have been worth trying another U.K. dealer?
Plenty of non franchised specialists about that seem to get parts ok.

So far this week I've ordered & had delivered

Rear driveshaft gaiter, oil filter, sump washer, sump plug.

Prior to that

I've had switch gear , sensors, clips , filters all ordered and delivered with no problems whatsoever

if they wont sell you parts, order online or go elsewere

Bahnstormer are great at getting bits to you quickly I have found.

I've not come across a Parts Dept person yet who would ask such questions of a customer just wanting to order a part using the Part No

Are you sure that yer man spoke to the Parts Dept? This interrogation sounds more like something that you would receive from the Service Dept rather than Parts

Why did yer man end up ordering from a German supplier?

What was the part? Just thinking if it’s flagged on the BMW parts as super safety critical, like umm, I dunno an ABS sensor or a throttle sensor of something that cause you not to stop or to accelerate uncontrollably, then maybe they might want to check and double check. But sounds a bit ott to me.

This is the sort of dealer who should be going out of business rather than someone like Redline!

Admittedly not in the last 12 months, but I’ve bought service parts and a cam chain adjust from Halliwell Jones on different occasions, with no issues. I’ve also found Cotswold Motorrad great for mail order parts.

Sytner Stevenage are really quick at despatching parts for my Z3 - I’ve found that I can also just order bike parts from them.
Makes no difference to them car or bike - as long as it’s BMW and has a part number!
Most bits seem to come in from Germany anyway after order 🤷‍♂️

Oh and I’m up in Staffordshire but they just seem really on the ball so I use them
