Main dealer selling bikes at auction. . . . . .

Dealers usually have a book full of traders who they sell to. A PX comes in and if its no good for the showroom, they collect bids and sell to the highest. No hassel of auction and the fees etc. They send it to auction if no trader wants it or if there's something wrong with it.

That was in the dark ages ... Auctions are the best place to sell at ... Bikes or cars ... I put over 100 cars a week through a physical auction site... All sold in less than 2 hours ... Traders were like leaches ... Popping in when they felt like it .. Cherry picking what they want ... It took days to get them all gone .... Plus at auction you get private punters who think there getting a bargain and pay more than the trade :D

I guess its 'horses for courses'.
Places I worked didn't have the time for auctions. Their business model is to get rid fast and let the new customer pay for any losses through the new deal...

I used to go to a few bike auctions. I thought it was a crap place to buy stock.

Loads of people going because they want to feel like a trader for a day and paying way too much for vehicles they couldn't even see running.

Good for a dealer I guess. How much time out of your day is spent putting vehicles through them though ?

We have auto uplift to BCA from our appraisal on an iPad ... I turn up 15 mins before auction and about 30 mins after ( doing provisionals )

So far more time efficient than hours spent haggling with traders .... And most main dealers / groups sell through auction centres now

And I've done both trade and auction over the years ...

I use to love car auctions. On a winters morning, nothing like a bacon butty and hot mug of tea and a bit of entertainment after a nice walk around the lot.

Didn't have to pay entry fees though, not exactly a vote of confidence in their ability to sell you stuff if you are being charged an entry fee for just walking inthrough the gates.

Never been charged ... Except Bonhams auction ... £50 for a catalogue, but that got 2 of you in

I nabbed the adv, had my eyes on the 08 GS too but wasn't going to pay that money for a standard with no luggage

Adv is v good spec with acceptable mileage, as in, not too low!!

And on another note, fee's are a little higher than stated above, it's 5% + VAT of final bid plus a set fee of €200 indemnity

I tried to do a deal at my local Jaguar dealer recently including my 57 plate X Type estate car as part ex.. I hoped they would put it on their forecourt, or pass it on to a trader & expected a bit of haggling but as the car has done 85,000 miles they said they couldn't sell it themselves. All they did was load a few minor details, make/model/mileage into an App on their ipad which gave them an auction valuation & then gave me a take it or leave it price. I was told that any cars they can't put on their forecourt have to go straight to auction & that they're not allowed to sell to traders anymore. Any hope I had of haggling was quickly extinguished.

Here's a good one, as the 4 bikes that sold were provisionally sold, it means they didn't quite hit the reserve, so Duffy's were given the option to accept the offers

I just phoned to find out if it was officially mine, it isn't! The reserve was set to €9750 apparently!! They gave me option to place another bid but sure we're miles off, that's that then, I did wonder how Duffy's would approach the auction with reserves, I know now, unrealistic!

So was it a complete waste of time? If there's an unrealistic reserve that no one knows about - it's like ebay but with the added expense of turning up in person?

Yep! I was out there last night picking up a car I bought and all 5 bikes were still sat there, so seems none were sold

see all 5 bikes are going through again tomorrow i think they might have missed there chance

At the risk of a backlash, 'there' is a place. They missed 'their' chance. I can't underline their on this gizmo but hopefully the drift is clear. [Insert hidey smiley.]
