I have just removed, repainted and replaced mine.
No real problems, all quite straightforward - IMHO easier than all the effort of masking things off to spray in situ.
What I did was:
- loosen both retaining/pivot bolts (which are also the 'O' ring bushes)
- carefully remove the right hand one whilst holding the stand and with a chunk of foam between the stand and the rear wheel in case it pushes too far back by the springs and damages the rear wheel. (the bike was on the side stand at this time and the centre stand was up)
- once out the springs could be removed
- undo the left hand bolt and the stand is off.
- remove the bushes, clean and check the 'o' rings are intact. then re-grease for reassembly.
- be sure to fill the holes for the bushes (I used a wad of kitchen roll paper) so that there is no overspray on the inside where the bush will sit.
- spray stand !
- on assembly I put the bushes in then the right hand bolt first.
- a little leverage (over a cloth so as not to damage the new paint finish) is all that is required to get the springs on (I used long nose pliers)
- there is then little effort required to line up the left hand bush, put in the bolt. Tighten it all up and you're done.
