Hi all,

I had to reset my laptop to factory settings as it would not start up :(

In the process I have lost all music and pictures. I had done back up discs but when I put them in the drive it just comes up with a load of files and nothing seems to happen.

Is there anyway of recovering pictures cheaply:nenau

Music I can put back on but did not back the pictures up after Jan 06:blast

Have just spent the last 7 friggin hours getting it to a near normal state:spitfire

Jon :tears

What thread :nenau

Its not my day is it :(

Jon

I suspect our friend Spikehammer meant THIS thread Jon.

Don't go installing ANYTHING else on the machine yet.....there's a fair chance you'll be able to recover stuff, but anything else you instal now will be over-writing the disc, possibly over things you want to get back.

I haven't tried Knoppix to do any recovery, but I'm quite happy to help you give it a go if you don't fancy following the instructions in the thread above yourself :)

Bill

Thanks Bill,

I will have a read. Must admit I have installed a few things like the printer software and AVG security.

It has taken me bloody hours and my head is spinning.

I feel like I have been robbed because I have lost so much personal stuff. Never felt like this before:(

Off to bed now as can't focus anymore on the keyboard:rolleyes:

:( I know the feeling mate.....

Lesson learnt though......I'm sure you'll manage to get some thing back, but whatever the result , go out and get an external USB HDD, or a DVD burner....and flippin back stuff up from now on!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember that feeling. Long time ago. Dare I say it..?

Apple Mac :hide

Oh and forget an external USB Hard Drive, you need Firewire if you are backing up loads of modern stuff (like photos).

For a monthly backup, USB 2 is ok.......mine's usually running through the night downloading stuff so I just let it dit there and do its stuff...and with 400gb HDD's coming in at 80ish quid now, the price is good too......

Must admit I haven't played with a firewire one though.....if prices are similar, might be a good alternative.

I've got piles up backups dating from '99 here.....it's surprising what you can go back and find

(one major pisser though........I have two year's worth burnt to CD in some odd format CDRFS or something.....can only be read by win 95....some day I'll have to reinstall it just to get some old stuff back, but at least I know it's there :) )

My laptop crashed out two weeks ago:spitfire :spitfire :spitfire

However the good news is that we have managed to save everything, I think?

Apart from all that was in Outlook, inc Contacts. :(

The guy says that it is all there, but he cannot transfer it over :nenau

Fecked if I know, other than he has had it now two weeks this coming Monday and still no joy.

Thank heavens I still have my pencil and note pad:rob

Might be worth having a look at Virtual PC which MS are making available "for free".
You can then install Win95 as a virtual OS.

Same thing happened to me - over a years worth of photos lost :tears

I've now bought myself 2 USB hard drives and make double back ups. The only problem is that it's easy to forget adding the pictures to all the drives and now I've ended up with some photos not on all of the drives :blast

If you use Acronis True Image , and I believe Norton Ghost, you can have them do the backups for you automatically Geoff......it compares what you've got with what's new and only adds the 'new' stuff.......'incremental backup' :)

Save yourself all the bother and risk ;)

Just on the recovery issue, as the lads said Knoppix worked a treat for me.
Completely ignored Windows problems and got back my stuff.:thumb2

I had the same thing after I came out of Hospital, PC would not boot up lost everything Pictures, Programs, pron and all my music. Still have not installed everything as it was.

Everything is backed up on a second external hard drive now just in case....Why didn't I do it before.:o
