Major problem on Sundays in France

Corrected for you. I don't know when you last visited France, but I haven't seen this facility for about ten years.

But they do have bods from Ireland, hanging around all day to give money to Frenchmen, so they can fill their motorbikes and get on with their travels. It might slow progress but hey, it's the journey that counts.

I've been riding/driving on the continent for a few years now, sounds like I really need to get with the programme and try one of these automatic pumps, they sound great fun....

You trully (sic) haven't lived, nor experienced the rawness of exotic travel. Not thrown yourself into the arms of Lady Luck, gambling all on the outcome of the flip of a card.

The jolly nice Englishman living in France who was most accommodating when the unmanned wouldn't accept my card and the GS was running on fumes.

If you're stuck in the poo then you have little alternative but to wait for somebody and hope they will assist.

Edit: Actually I lied! I didn't have my card at all, I lost that on day 2.

Odd how many Tossers eschew UK supermarket petrol stations, riddled as they are with shoddy fuel or so it's claimed.

But jump joyously into Le Clerk or Ocean when en continent...

EU harmony will address this issue. It's the law!

When you are running on vapour and spent the last 40 miles looking for a fuel stop , shoddy fuel is the fuel of choice.

Off out on the train on Friday morning, only ever had trouble once with an unmanned but I have carte bleue so no problem. That is until I just noticed it's out of date, and the bank haven't to my knowledge sent me a new one.:blast So I'll see you all in the queue sunday:thumb

I did have trouble a couple of weeks ago not at a garage but a shop, where all my Barclays cards were declined.Mrs used her HSBC which was fine.I phoned Barclays straight away thinking they had put a security stop on them, but they said all was ok.So perhaps there is something with some UK cards going on over there.

Or there was a temporary glitch in the data links (or whatever the IT chimps call them) rendering some UK cards useless.

Further reports of glitches, operating errors, lost cards, Volvo tank capacity and the weather awaited..... maybe the French really have cut us off and we are dooooomed.

My French friend just e mailed me the following

I am not aware of this issue, I have used my Lloyds debit card before and never had an issue...
I don't understand why they would not accept any cards as if you don't have the pin number of the card it does not work anyway so it is safe...
Sorry can't help on this ..

I have asked about this on the French section of a camping forum, UKCampsite. So far everyone is reporting that all is good with cards ....... but possible problems with FX prepaid cards sometimes.

Working at Le Mans pre 24hour race about 5 years ago, hundreds of us Brits from motor racing had all sorts of cards blocked. 3 failed attempts with a card and it's blocked. CHAOS:blast
I ended up with only my Barclaycard working and paying out over 15K for race team purchases as so many of the teams cards had been blocked.

The explanation was that the French data transmissions had a 'speed issue/overload' as there were so many attempted transactions and the computers couldn't process the foreign transaction data quick enough so the transaction is refused by the banks computers.
More recently a Deutsche Bank expert on card use told us that card refusal in hotels, shops or at automated machines such as pumps on the continent is often due to slow data transmission. ie the receiving system isn't getting data re your foriegn card fast enough so refuses the transaction.
Try placing the card in machines, pause, and then enter pin slowly sometimes works in counter terminals and pumps :)

I always brim the tank on Saturday if travelling in France and I have E LeClerc and others on the Satnav if I'm not using the Autoroute as there equipment normally more up to date;)

;)Italian friends showed us how they never pay at most French automated Autoroute pay stations

What did your Italian friends show you?

The card readers at Le Mans are notoriously unreliable; cash (at least for ticket purchases at the Arnage Corner ticket hut) is king.

I've P M'd you.

I've been to Le Mans for many years and had few problems, normally find one or two cards that work. But when LeMans races are on there are often issues, I'm told that the most likely issue is always re data speed.
I've had card issues in Spain, Holland, Belgium, Germany, France, China, Thailand, India. Deutsche Bank guy said that data speed and computers talking to one another is the main problem any time when you're out of your cards home country and the card fails.
