Major problem on Sundays in France

Sun shining, card working and rose well chilled. A little light lunch at midi and all is well with the world.
Good for you.:dabone

Here in eastern France it is very wet. Truly biblical thunderstorms in Basel and Alsace last night and looks set to be grim for the rest of this week.

...I phoned Visa...they said "this has nothing to do with us"...we only operate on your "Bank's instructions and terms"...so I phoned HSBC. Nope...they weren't aware of any restrictions on "their" Visa cards.

So perhaps it sounds like a bank/building society issue......

I needed a pair of pants(boxers) and the Esso station would'nt take my Next card. Fuckin doomed we are ;all doomed.

I have a problem with all my cards! I have put them in the rose wine box but I can't find the key pad and the damn thing is empty!! If this continues I'll have to go to the bar and find someone with a full glass and put the cost on credit. Now if I can only find the way out of the house:D

I have not had a problem with UK cards for over 6 years but I know that at times of high demand the French system cannot cope. I always keep my tank full even if it's topping up every 100 miles or so (fag break). Next weekend being a major holiday in France there may be some problems on the autoroutes as the whole of France moves south for the holidays. The A7 at the moment is saturated with lots of hold ups, it will get worse! If anyone is travelling use the RN's and Bis network.

What does Bis stand for?

What does Bis stand for?

The migration for the holidays is called the Bison fute. Roughly translated as buffalo migration. The signs for alternate route are posted in yellow with the word BIS before the destination. Tourist offices used to give out maps showing these alternative routes. Bis basically means second and is also applied to house numbers, for example my house consists of two joined houses number 19 and bis 19.

I moved to Toulouse two years ago, and 32k miles later (most around the Pyranees) I don't recall seeing a fuel station manned on a Sunday unless it was on an Autoroute. Spain, sure. France, no. That is going to make things damn tricky for you guys visiting now they are screwing with the cards.

So, it is worthwhile having a 30 Litre tank then :augie :D

Super U in St. Mere Eglise ( unmanned) worked last Sunday .... and if you're short of a drop of oil the bike shop opposite dispensed a litre of free oil to me ( admittedly that was Saturday and purely sign language used ) :thumb2

Don't ride on a Sunday in France unless it is motorways or you know that you have enough fuel to reach your destination, it really is not that difficult to do - just chill out on Sunday and stop worrying - simples :D

Eh?
Who is screwing with the cards and how?

I was referring to the earlier post that mentioned the UK card companies were declining French paymenst (or whatever it was).

I didn't mean to imply anything nefarious going on.

Did make me chuckle I was thinking the same when I read the earlier posts but having just got back from Suisse normand in our camping car having used only our new Halifax credit card for tolls, fuel (lots of at 25mpg), and supplies at intermarches all went well. So it should be easier with 45 mpg and back roads and 33l tank.

Phew, 14 bikes filled (twice) at automatic stations.

Did not conduct a survey as to what cards bods were using, as I could not be arsed.
