Bloody Hell....must be pure chance that our (very) rural fuel station is open on a Sunday........and that's very definitely in France......

That was why I carefully phrased it as "I can't remember seeing one" instead of "none of them" as I figured there would be an exception! Where are you based, it'll be useful to know where to find a manned location if I need it!Deleted account 240901001

More local supermarché open these days...than used to be. (Ours is a little independent in Bretagne). Not sure if I "agree" with it or not, but it is happening.

no problems for me last week in France, or Switzerland...debit or credit cards, odd one in Belgium though, 2am, pump wouldn't accept card, cashier inside would take cash, but card payment not allowed anyway inside (pre authorised quantity of fuel) language barrier stopped any explanation
Some (not many) stations in Belgium and Holland require you to say how much fuel in euros you intend to buy.
That amount is then debited from your card / taken from you in cash, before you draw the fuel. You then fill up. The pump will then cut off automatically when you reach that amount. If you draw less than the amount, go back into the shop, the bod behind the till will credit you back with the difference.
It prevents 'Fill up and drive off' thefts.

Yup, they know they don't need hiviz to fill up on a Sunday.
Its quite common in France at night too. In fact, many petrol stations have signs to this effect, but let you take fuel and then pay afterwards
Neither have I, BUT, the thieving b*st*rds charged me over £1 for EVERY transaction, which over 2 weeks mounted up to quite a lot. Hence I got a FairFX card, which now won't work

We've just returned from a 12 day trip through France and Corsica.
I have a Halifax MasterCard Credit card - there are no charges for using it abroad and it worked in every automated fuel stop and motorway toll.

We had no problems at 24/7 unmanned filling stations, except in Bruz, but I think the notice read the card reader was broken.
We did have a problem at Renne when we didn't have a MasterCard handy, eventually after reversing back into to a safer place I dug out a card but by then the machine had a red flashing light and we had to wait for an attendant.

Same with my Halifax Clarity card, used in France, Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium with no issues.
We've just got back from ten days through Belgium, Switzerland, France and Germany. There were only two instances where we had issues. However it was the seventh card we tried before finally getting fuel. Different card worked when we had issues the second time. Problem was that according to the locals there were no manned stations.
We were thinking of waiting for a local and giving them cash in exchange for using their card but luckily that wasn't necessary.
