Making Ally Panniers

How about anodising them? Powder coating needs to be aluchromed underneath to do it properly,so you might as well just anodise them.Just a thought

top box

I've PM'd you Vern, but just in case you read this thread first, I wondered how you're fixed at the moment to make me Top Box to match my 'Vern' panniers?
I've done a drawing (well a scribbled sketch at least)

Panniers are now finished and have been in use for six weeks including two camping week ends and various week end rides. They have finished up more or less as intended. This is the first time that I have used top loading panniers and boy are they easy to pack.

Off to Romania next week, am confident in their suitablity

Costs were
Four locks £10.00 each
Sheet aluminum £20.00
Hammerite paint £10.00
Aluminum welding on corner of lids £16.00
Total cost £86.00 + 1 favour owed?

The support bar between the two panniers is a very light gauge/rolled aluminum but doesn't really need it. Its belt and braces.

Well done, they look great and suit the bike. I am sure they will last years.

What thickness aluminium did you make them out of?

Just a bit of an update on my bike and panniers. When I first started making my panniers and brackets the ADV wasn't on sale, so although the original 1200 rack looks good, its next to useless. So I made my own which was more practical for me and also lower for "short arse" to get on and off the bike.

Changed my bike for an 08 model this year, used it with the same panniers and frames. Then as holidays and most camping week ends had finished. I went and got an ADV rack which improves carrying capacity and better for "short arse". The down side purely cosmetic, was the stainless pannier racks looked a bit too heavy and clumsy. To me too much stainless, so I took a drill and a saw and cut them about a bit. Now I am happy with the looks again.
