OK - this is proving to be MUCH more difficult than I thought. All I need is a map holder to fit on the tank of my 06 plate GSA - NOT a tank bag, and please, no VELCRO fittings on the tank... I note that you can fit just a map holder oin to a Baglux harness, which seems great - BUT, I have read in this forum that the map holder is not waterproof and so no good. Also, seems a bit extravagant if all I really need is a map holder! ONe member has suggested simply using an Ortlieb map holder - just cant see how you could secure it to the tank enough to stop it flapping aboot!
Your comments will be much appreciated - SA

This is where what you dont want to do needs to be done ;).

Two pieces of velcro hidden under the lip of the front plastics up near the bars on each side (this way the map is not attached to the bars) and one piece nicely cut to go on the tank by the filler cap, just 1" square which holds it down. I too didnt want velcro visible but its the only solution I found. Another idea I had was to add a strap going to a piece of velcro on the tank but hidden by the seat lip, but that was more fuss.

For the sake of a small spot of velcro by the filler this has solved the problem and the map is fine at all speeds.

I wondered about getting a sucker for the tank bit tho.

Post number one mentions the dreaded Velcro....which you specifically asked us to avoid suggesting. However, panic not, help is at hand.

It's so easy...

You need a......wait for it.....a.....a....a waterproof map case.

Go to the Ortlieb site and find an Ortlieb, waterproof, map carrier. It's the thing that hairy socked hikers (that's like bikers, but with an h not a b) hang around their necks, with a map in. You maybe get lots of them in Scotland......

They come in two sizes, roughly A4 and a larger one. A4 is fine.

They come with a nice adjustable drawstring, too. This means it's easy to attach it to your iron steed and just as easy to take it off.

You can find the two Ortlieb map cases at:

http://www.ortlieb.com/_prod.php?lang=en&produkt=kartentasche

and

http://www.ortlieb.com/_prod.php?lang=en&produkt=kartentasche-xl

You can find Ortlieb kit on sale in most good camping / outdoor activity shops.

There, sorted.

Touratech also do a mapcase (part no 055-0073) which fixes (with Velcro:augie) to a base (part no 055-0071) which is fixed to the tank with straps - works well.
Hope this helps.
