Can anyone recommend a good map holder for the GS Adventure? Not with a tank bag - a map holder only.

It needs the usual connection around the head and preferably onto a velcro section near the battery ( as many of the tank bags connect to - ie. the same / similar type of design ).
I have searched the usual TT and ADVrider sites all to no avail. Magnetic of course is useless as the tank is not steel ( only the frame tubing is ) and a 2nd problem is that the tank has so many bends on it, a flat surface is barely useable to hold a map on it in the first place.
Thanks
Chris

map holder

cheers...I tried that one aswell, from a mate of mine. Thanks for the link though.

I hunted and hunted for a good solution and didnt find one.

In the end I bought an ortlieb walkers map bag. It has two clips which luckily clip onto the plastic lip at the head of the tank. I then cut a piece of industrial strength velcro put it on just behind the fuel cap (looks ok-ish...an alternative idea was to sow on a strap down to the tank bag velcro) and put a piece on back of map bag. Works a treat and stays static when turning bars.
Alternatively because theres so much metal work up front on the adv a cycling one would probably go on the cross bar nicely. Also the perspex clip-in cycling ones might fit on the upper support behind the screen.

map holder for GSA

Thanks for all the suggstions above.

I suggest a possible market in this area as the alloy/ally tank and the profile are very bespoke , so if there is any enterprising or innovative person around, some food for thought. A tank bag can be a bit bulky if one is out for a short run and just wants a map for the route.

I suggest a possible market in this area.

All of the main bike accessory suppliers over here (Hein Gericke, Polo, Louis etc.) offer them in their catalogues. I thought Hein Gericke were also represented in the UK, so I guess you could try them.

Some examples:

--Still waiting for Touratech to pull their finger out and deliver the "Map Case" to me, as below. This clips onto the cross-bar bit on the handlebars, and takes just a map.
1 x Endurolenker map bag CM2
(01-080-0022-0) = £18.49

They do 2 different sizes- the above is the larger for a more spread out map !

If I can find it again on their site I'll post a link.

I have the one that fits to the crossbar, which I used to use on my 1150GS. It's on the small size, meaning all of the "standard" bikers maps intended for tankbags don't fit, plus the thing is rather "floppy", meaning that at anything above about 30mph, the thing folds over!

I now use the Quick-Lock "Engage" tankbag, mostly for the map facility. It's also possible to get a map holder for the adaptor on the tank (from Wüdo, I think), but it looks a bit agricultural and to be honest, the Quick-Lock "Engage" tankbag is rather useful - large enough for a water bottle and a camera, so this is my personally preferred option. Oh yeah, you can fit it and remove it in seconds. :thumb

I have one made by Held. It fastens by a loop round the headstock and a big velcro strip held from underneath the seat. You just pull the velcro apart and move the map out the way when you want to fill up with petrol.

suggestions

Thanks for the ideas.
1) Who is the dealer for HELD ?
2) Dave B. Please see the first posting. I am not talking about tankbags here. I am talking about JUST the map holder for the GSA only. As mentioned by the others, the tank has a profile on it that doesn't allow anything to stick to it ( other than suckers or additional velcro ), so its a real pain to hold a map in a useful position .

Thanks

to give you some idea

This is what we used last year on the pioneered Pyrenees trip , a real pain and the pegs marked the perspex screen aswell.

xylo66,

I know that you weren't looking for a tank bag, I was looking for the same as you, and despite trying both the Touratech and Polo items, came to the conclusion that the Quick Lock Engage tankbag was a better solution. As I posted, I use it basically only for the map holding ability.....
