I have the above with the original 2008 Europe NT mapping installed.

I would like to update to the latest 2011 maps but have heard that their can be problems with insufficient space available.

Does anyone know if I am likely to face the same problem, there is no music or pictures on my Zumo, only the original mapping.

I don't really want to run the updated maps partially or wholly from an SD card.

Thanks.

If you go on to the Zumo forum, there's a step by step guide to downloading all of Europe.
It does mean using an SD card, but the unit runs it all seamlessly, basically you download the new mapping to your computer, then you can select what maps go in the unit, and the rest onto the card, it's quite easy to do (after all I managed it..).

Sleepy,

Thanks very much for that....I will give it a go !!! :)

Not sure just 'cos you did it I can too though, not with my level of computer literacy.

Ta.

If you have the original maps DVD get the Lifetime update. This is a dl and lasts as long as the unit does. Slightly more expensive than a onetime update but could be cheaper in the long run.

If you go for a onetime dl update there can be problems later on. It goes straight to the unit and does not reside on the pc.

1: After a period of time that map can disappear from your garmin account and you will not be able to dl it again without a long frustrating call to garmin support. btdt.

2: A Dl'd onetime map does not support lifetime updates if you wish to purchase them at a later date. Only found out about this later when I went to update using a lifetime update pack. You pay the same price as a DVD for the dl without the update ability. Luckily I have a second unit to transfer the update pack to. I now have to pay for another map on dvd to progress to lifetime on the first unit. :banghead:

I updated to 2011 a few weeks ago, at first it said there wasn't enough room so I deleted all the extra languages etc and then western europe fitted on without a problem. If I'm heading over to Eastern Europe I'll put it on the sd card.

There is the option to install it onto PC. However, I believe that you need Mapsource installed to do this. There are ways of installing Mapsource without having purchased a product with the DVD.

Onetime updates remain downloadable from your myGarmin account for one year after purchase.

Can you elaborate on this point, it's a little unclear. Are you saying that applying a lifetime update to a GPS with an existing onetime update won't work? Or is the same issue as having Mapsource installed before you begin :nenau

At the time when I installed my dl'd onetime update, with mapsource installed, it would not allow me to install to the pc and unit. Only allowed to install to the unit. :nenau

It did not for me. After speaking to garmin. I was told it was not possible to lifetime update over a dl onetime update, only works if you have the dvd update. That has been my experience. Could be just them trying to make extra money :(

Did you have to delete the current maps or did mapsounce overwrite them?

Mapping update

Hi, I'm also running 2008 mapping (I think) and would like to update to the latest version. I have a very slow and unreliable broadband connection, so is there any other way? Are the updates available on disc for example?
Cheers
Chris

One Time updates are still available on DVD. Though, from my experiences last year, where I ordered one of these, it can take quite a while. I gave up waiting in the end and did it on-line. I was waiting for over two months for the DVDs to come into stock before giving up.

I thought I would need the DVD due the somewhat on-official (but legit) install of City Nav Europe on my US spec SP2720. However, the conversion process I had done with my earlier mapping update had in fact converted it, to all intents and purposes, to a Euro spec so the on-line update worked OK.

Nope, Garmin and NavTeq are a bunch of idiots. Their map updating process is poorly thought out. I complained about their process earlier this year. Garmin's support response was the usual 'fingers in the ears, we know better then you'; in the end I gave up and downloaded it via easier to use (that support resume for instance) solutions and installed that way.

Like a lot of IT stuff, the official way is normally the most difficult. I've stupidly tried to download the 2011.50 update via Broadband and a MiFi connection [1] and each time its failed and despite Garmin's support teams claims, their software/servers do not resume, it restarts the whole download again, pathetic. Never mind the increased load on their servers/infra.

BTW: 2011.50 Europe doesn't seem to be available yet from non-Garmin sources.

[1] downloading 4-5G over 3's highspeed network isn't a problem via BT/UseNet etc.

Lifetime updates aren't available on DVD, only download.

Yes, sure. Chris didn't mention which he was interested in and I only made mention of the OneTime updates being available on DVD, maybe I should have clarified further by mentioning that the LifeTime one wasn't...

Sort of the same, but maybe more factual, as you answering 'Nope' to his question... it's all in the detail :D

and 2012.10 is readily available for free download since yesterday afternoon in an unlocked format -install it on a SD card and you have it fully working

I find it hard to understand why people bother with pirated mapping now that lifetime updates are approx £50 and available every three months or so :nenau

The vast majority on this forum have relatively expensive bikes, riding kit and have purchased quite an expensive sat nav yet still want the mapping updates for nowt :blagblah

Updates

Thanks for all the info, chaps. The lifetime update makes sense, but trying to download 4-5G with my connection isn't going to work, particularly if the system doesn't 'resume'. I'll try with a friends faster/more reliable system.
Cheers,
Chris
