The latest update for Mapsource is out Version 5.3 but probably not worth loading very few changes. Get it Here

Thing is, that these are incremental updates, so if you don't update, you'll not be able to update when 5.4 comes along.

Hmmm

Wasn't aware of that Mike feel sure I have updated over a few versions in one go, however I will update now just to be on the safe side.

Mike

Are you sure about that? I just re-installed Mapsopurce on a different PC and went straight for the 5.2 update without a problem.

Are you saying I have to install each update in turn?

Look at the Garmin page. You'll notice the 5.3 update says 5.2-5.3. Sometime thet update (specially in the beginning) from let's say 5.0 to 5.2, but the later it becomes, the less likely this will happen.

I've always updated even if there's nothing special in the release since sometimes they don't want you to know about a serious problem that has not yet been reported, so they don't put it in the update list. And then the next update is an incremental release and you'll need to update the previous one.

here I go again

once more for the slow kid in the class...

Is 'map source' the prog that runs on the pc?
Then 'city select' sits on top of that on your pc (actual map data)?
Then yet more software on the gps itself?
All upgradeable seperately and assuming like me you bought garmin 'pack' you upgrade free of charge?

I know these things are straight forward to the knowledgable amongst us. sorry!

:stupid

Alan,

yep, that's it, broadly speaking. The software upgrades for Mapsource and your Garmin are free downloads from Garmin's site. The Mapsource upgrades (current European City Navigator is v5) are going to cost you, however.

If you haven't got v5, do a search on this site for Mapsource and you should find a couple of threads explaining how people got an upgrade to v5 for free (and how others had to pay for it :D)

Mike:)

I think that proves it

I don't think these updates are incremental.
I have just sucessfully run the patch on Mapsource version 4.10 and its just gone to 5.3 in one go.
I wonder if I'll notice the difference!
Jimbo.

Quite right.
You can update from way back, straight to the latest version. The only incremental thing about it all is the size of the update file. Now 7.3MB. We'll all need broadband soon!

Hmmm, diplomatically put. The updates include all patches prior so you can skip as many updates that you wish. Effectively the install application re-installs Mapsource.

Mapsource is the software which sits on the PC and allows you to view and route plan. It is currently at Version 5.3.

The GPS unit has its own software and for the Streetpilot III this currently runs at version 2.50

City Navigator etc is a collection of digitised maps etc which are used as source data by both Mapsource and the Software resident in the GPS unit. The version will vary according to the date you purchased your GPS unit. I have an older version and am currently running City Navigator Europe 4.20 with Data Version 2.0. The latest version is 5.0 (only purchasable in Europe with a new GPS unit).

Data is transferred from the Mapsource program to the GPS unit using Garmin's own proprietry data format structures - one of which is PCX5.

Other than formatting and translating the data for transfer there is no relationship or dependancy between the software in the GPS unit and the software in the PC.... However, there is a relationship between the digitised map data and the software you run on each unit. The Map Data will advise which version of software you need to run as a minimum.

... some of the data structures included in the mapping product (Europe City Navigator V4 etc) may require the latest verion or a recent version of the Mapsource Software and GPS Software to work correctly.....

Once installed you do not need to change or upgrade your Mapsource or GPS unit software unless you wish to avoid some of the bugs (features) in the current software or you have upgarded your map data and it is no longer compatible with your current software.....

The Garmin Software Update pages for the software provide a listing of all fixes that have been applied.

Personally, I always upgrade but that is my nature. I do the same with XP and other operating systems/applications/database etc. I never like to be too far behind in case I am faced with a problem on the road which could have been avoided by staying current....

..but that is my choice, you can stay where you are if you are happy and only upgrade when you actually need a fix to a problem which affects you....
