MapSource City Navigator 2008 Europe - AT LAST!

Going into the Garmin website via "My Garmin", and checking for updates to a registered unit leads me to:
"Mapsource update City Navigator Europe 2008",
for my 2610, which was bought secondhand, but registered to me in January.
No mention of cost at all during the ordering process.

Maybe I was lucky?

I bought my Quest off eBay and the previous owner hadn't registered it, this qualified me for a free update to the latest mapping. You may be in luck :D

Zumo 550

From 'My Garmin' I am told that "Map Update 2008 City Navigator Europe NT" (Part No. 010-11045-50) is available.
Click on the link and it links to 'where to buy' which takes me back to the Garmin website and ultimately, a list of resellers none of whom have heard of the update DVD.
I rang Garmin Europe and they say (as per a previous post) that it will not be available for a few weeks......no mention of price as yet.

It seems that not many of their resellers have ever or still do stock mapping software - a couple were helpful though.

GPS warehouse who Garmin actually recommended could not help at all and were at a loss as to why they were recommended.

I'm sure that it will sort it self out within the next few weeks - typical Garmin!

I was told that the update will not be available for a few weeks more as they (Garmin) are having teething problems with the update. I was then told to try and order the update in a few weeks when they hope to have it sorted

Ordered mine for a 2720 on the website today. Just to check if it was worth it I found a torrent download a couple of weeks ago. I guess that if you just need UK and "developed" Western Europe, and have 8 or 9, it may not be worth it. There are probably not enough road changes to worry about and the main difference I can see is updates to POIs (it shows my local Safeways as Waitrose now!!). Lets face it, few people bother to update paper maps every year.

If you are travelling east it's a big difference and to illustrate it, a quick tutorial. Some countries only have "basemap", some full "detail maps" and some part "detail maps". The software uses "basemap" for routes if there is no detail maps but you can't search for towns if the basemap is in use, just click on the screen for a waypoint or destination. When detail maps are available the basemap is not used for routes at all.

This led to a problem in CN9. Czech Republic, for example had VERY limited detail mapping which did not include many major roads. One route I wanted came out at about 40 miles in CN8 (only basemap available) but 110 miles in CN9 as it insisted on useing the few detail map roads. In 2008 it comes up with the correct route again. All the roads are there.

Checking in Mapsource by scrolling around Eastern Europe shows additional countries with detail mapping and by switching between 9 and 2008 they all seems to show much more detail in 2008 than they did with 9 or the basemap.

Incidentally a way to test, Mapsource (and GPS) uses Basemap for the display at small scale and detail (when available) at large scale. Set Mapsource to 15 mile and Basemap is shown. Start increasing the scale through 10 to 7 and detail maps are shown. If the maps are good more detail should show as you increase scale. If roads disappear as you zoom in it tells you that those roads were on the basemap and not on the details map - and Mapsource won't use them for routes.

No mention of cost at all during the ordering process.

It does not cost anything to get the disc but unless you qualify for a free upgrade you will need your credit card when you install it and need the unlock code.

Still using V7 on my 2610 so time for an upgrade methinks

Anyone got City Navigator 2008 up and running yet :nenau

Cheers Andy,

I agree the coverage in V9 of Czech was crap and this year I am going further afield and Bosnia wasn't covered at all. What's mapping like in 2008 for former Yugoslavia?

MyGarmin told me that an update is available for my 2610. I've ordered the DVD.
Information about the Disk you ordered:
MapSource Product: City Navigator Europe 2008 Delxue DVD
Version #: 2008
Release Date: Dec 1, 2007

Going through the "unlock code" utility gets me to a page where they ask for $75 (about £38 or 52 Euro). No idea where people are getting the $129 price from.

I just ordered the update and got it for free.

Up to now, each time I tried to order it (without success) they wanted $129 plus tax & postage. Don't know the why and wherefore:confused:

Only thing different was that I registered a new Garmin Colorado GPS unit yesterday and got a second unlock code to load Mapsource V9 onto it. Maybe had something to do with it, I don't know !!!

NT 2008 goes as far east as Bulgaria and Greece. The little bit of Turkey shown (to a bit east of Istambul) is just the main roads on the basemap.

I'm currently running 2 units (SP3's) on V6 :D (1st unit purchased in 2004 & 2nd one last year)

Got an e-mail today from Garmin informing me of the City Navigator Europe 2008 Update.

Typed in my serial number & my free dvd is on it's way!

e-mail quotes...

The update DVD is free of charge. However, you will need a new unlock code to view and use the new product, which must be requested through our online unlock process. An update charge might apply during this process. The update charge is $75 (+17.5% VAT if applicable) for the whole disc coverage.

What can I expect from this upgrade?
