Recived this from Garmin today - no prices on the email but follow the link and it's £59.99 + £2.90 Carriage (guess that equates to the $129.99) [2-3 weeks quoted delivery]

That price is for the NT upgrade, as opposed to the non-NT version used by earlier Garmins such as the 2610, Quest I etc.

Don't know where you're looking, but this page says different.

Do they have their dates in the other format? 02/06/2008 meaning 6th of feb.

Anyway, when I followed the email link it said not yet available although it recognised my unit. When I logged in and entered it myself ,it let me order the disc. No clue as to if it will be due an unlock charge though.

So enlighten me, if an unlock code will be required what is the benefit of sending a disc out before charging the customer?

Why do they not just put it as a download and save the cost of posting them out?

And, with a 256mb quest is it going to use a lot more memory up?

Garmin are American so 02/06/2008 does indeed mean 6th Feb.

If you purchased your unit new since late last year (September ISTR) then you should qualify for a free upgrade, any earlier than that and you'll have to pay for an unlock-code.

You don't need the unlock code until you're installing the mapping, I suppose they've decided to charge at that point. Psychologically, you've already got something for free so are more inclined to stump up for the code...

The mapping is on a DVD and takes up close to 2GB, whilst most have broadband these days that's still quite a chunk.

And, with a 256mb quest is it going to use a lot more memory up?

Depends on how you look at it; for coverage for a country such as the UK the file size will only increase marginally. For continental touring where you'll be loading mapping onto your Quest around a route plotted in Mapsource there will be a huge increase when comparing with much earlier mapping, City Select for example. When compared with City Navigator v8 and v9 there will be little difference. This is down to the larger mapping tile sizes in City Navigator v8 and later which cripples the Quest somewhat for long tours.

I have a Quest and have ordered the upgrade, my most current mapping is City Nav v8 so it's time for an update.

The Quest is still usable on long tours but you'll need Metroguide Europe (currently v9 is most recent) and a copy of MetroWizzz.

SO I emailed, having found the $75 had increased to $129 and emailed this to check:

In this email you quote the update cost as $75 plus vat. On your web site you quote $129.99. Is this the usual UK rip off by US based companies or is this a fraudulent e-mail?

I would be grateful for advice.

Garmins reply was:

The $75 was for an upgrade - The $129 is for a 'Hard Copy'

I asked for a link to the $75 version and am still awaiting a reply.

Do you have a myGarmin account? You can see all your registered units, associated mapping and all unlock codes as well as being able to order mapping upgrades. Doing it via this route gets you the upgrade price of $75.

The two prices you are seeing there are for two different DVD's. The update DVD will cost $75, but the full hard copy of the maps will cost $129.99. So what you are seeing there is correct. I hope this straightens things out for you.

I,m in New Zealand and have a Quest with NZ maps on which is quite good.

Next year I shall be visiting the UK and Europe and will buy a Zumo (much cheaper over there) with the UK and Europe maps loaded.

Question is how good are these maps as they seem to cover an awful lot of countries ?

Are they detailed enough or do they just cover the main routes.

Oh and I presume you can change the screen and voice commands from miles to kilometers ok ?

Very detailed, right down to street level for the whole of UK and Western Europe.

Detailed enough that if you aren't paying attention, you will find yourself foot-padding your GS down a muddy rut, hoping like hell it gets better up ahead and not worse!....

Of course you can change from imperial to metric.

I actually had a play with a Zumo today and think I will like it a lot, easy to operate and also to change from miles to kilometers in fact I am tempted to get one here in NZ, but at NZ$1650 about 645 pounds I think I will make do with my quest in the meantime !!!!!

Got an e-mail today from Garmin informing me of the City Navigator Europe 2008 Update.

Typed in my serial number & my free dvd is on it's way!

I got the same email and typed in the Quest serial number off the back of it and it says it isn't registered. Logged into My Garmin and lo and behold there it is, when I clicked on updates it said there aren't any!

Ideas? Garmin helpdesk?

Hi Paul,

Some guys (like myself) are ordering the NT version for the 2720/2820/Zumo, whilst you obviously need the "classic non-NT" version for the Quest/2610 etc.
So why not ring the help desk - they should not send out the mail if they know you have a Quest and the "classic" version is not yet available.

I received my update DVD today - "Map Update 2008 City Navigator Europe NT" - connected my unit to my tablet PC and it took between 5 & 10 minutes to tranfer data to PC and then just over 10 minutes to (automatically) transfer data to 'build the new map file' on the unit, another 50 minutes to install 'map data' on to the unit - all okay so far.

You can register 2 personal Garmin units for Mapsource software. In my case, this is a Quest and a 2610. The upgrade from my existing version of Mapsource will be $75 + VAT. If I want to upgrade a third GPS or if I haven't registered my previous versions of Mapsource then I'll have to pay $129.
Phone Garmin to sort out your problem, don't email, don't use the web page.
