Just a quick question which some of you guys may be able to help with?
When I got my Garmin Quest in the spring it came with V6 cd-roms and free up-grade cd-roms for V7.
The V7 was an up-grade and could only be installed after a full V6 installation but my question is can the V6 now be un-installed?? - I only use the V7 maps and it seems a waste of space to keep the V6 but on the other hand I don't want to screw-up the existing installation!!
Any advice welcomed!!

I believe that if your original installation shows up in the Windows 'Add-Remove Programs' control panel, you can remove the original version by using this control panel, and it will not affect the function of the newer version.

The key point is that you have to remove the original (older) version via the 'Add-Remove Programs' control panel, not simply by deleting folders, maps, etc. Look for an entry on the program list (within that control panel applet) that says CityNavigator Europe Version 6 or words to that effect - in other words, the predecessor to your current version - and remove that entry. If you see an entry - or multiple entries - that are called 'MapSource', do NOT remove these entries.

Beginning around about version 5 of most of the cartography packages, Garmin provided the ability to remove earlier versions without impairing the function of later versions that had been installed as upgrades, rather than original installations.

Michael

NB: If, for any reason, you have installed the original 'WorldMap' package, don't ever remove WorldMap or any 'MapSource' entries on the add-remove program list, because doing so will screw up everything else on the way out. This happens because WorldMap dates from the 1990s, before Microsoft implemented the current guidelines and protocols for version protection during the application uninstallation process.

That's The Info I Was Looking For

Thanks Michael,
I'd noticed that I had two programmes in the Add/Remove options - one called "Mapsource - European City Select v6", the other simply "Mapsource".
However, the v6 one has no size against it whereas the latter is over 3,000mb and said to be v6:4 - which made me wonder if, during the installation of the v7 update the v6 was partly removed automatically?? My mapsource programme list v6 & v7 maps but I only use the v7 anyway.
Anyway I'll give the uninstall a go in the near future, thanks for your help.

Actually, if you rely on Garmin's installers, the answer is no. The closest you can get to an uninstall using their channels is to keep the smallest region loaded (in the North American package, that would be Canada).

What you can do, alternatively, is eliminate the registry keys that point to v6. Then, after successfully running Mapsource to see that it no longer "sees" the v6 data, you can delete the data wholesale from your hard drive.

I am using v6 maps installed as an upgrade to v4.

One (and the only) problem I met after removing all old v4 maps was that I could no longer open old MapSource files when, and only when, the files had active v4 map segments defined.

I reinstalled v4, opened all old MapSource files I wanted to keep, deactivated all maps, and saved the MapSource files.

After that I could delete all v4 maps without problems.
