PLEASE can anyone help me. We have bought a Zumo 550 and have the Mapsource software. We are English but live in France with a PC with French Windows Vista. When we install Mapsource it automatically installs in French. We would like it in English with English manual so we can understand it!!! Garmin tell us this is impossible. I can't believe we are the only people living in a foreign country who want their software in our native language. All other siftware we have asks what language we want.
Does anyone have any bright ideas please.
Thanks a lot
Mrs ( very frustrated) Spotless

Just an idea, try going into "control panel" off the start button, then "regional settings" then setting it to "English (United Kingdom)" and see if that helps :nenau

If you install a mapsource update from Garmin will that give you an option to choose language?

Hi,
Thanks John but unfortunately that doesn't work.
Ebbo, I have downloaded the latest mapsource.exe but unfortunately it installs in the same way. Thanks both for trying though.

I take it Vista is in French? Bugger, just read your post again! I will try to install Mapsource on one of our PCs that is in French and see what I can find. I did install V9 on a French computer running XP and that gave me a choice of languages.

I'm Canadian living in The Netherlands, and I always buy my PC's with English Operating systems, so I can't say I've run into your situation...

Not your easiest option, but perhaps you can get your PC supplier to get you an OEM english version of Windows?... Rebuild the system... and then install Mapsource....

I tried that with a HP laptop, the only possibility was for me to buy an English version of Windows so I gave the thing to my son and bought a Dell with Windows in English.

Thank you

....thank you everybody for your replies....especially Bumkin....I will be trying that out tommorrow....too tired now, I have been on the PC all day trying to crack this......I will keep you all posted as to how I get on.....in the mean time, if anybody has been successful in language changing please let me know.

We sold our Tom Tom Go 910 to get this Zumo 550 since no matter what Mr Spotless tried it just would not work whilst on the bike.....perfect in the car but within 5 miles max on the bike it would crash....the Tom Tom that is ....not the bike!.....I had to physically wrestle it out of Mr Spotless's hand to stop him throwing it into the sea one day when we were out for a ride 'cus he was so p'd off with it!......

Thanks again everybody

Mrs. Spotless (the more patient half of Team Spotless!)

An early comparison....the maps available in the Tom Tom where far more detailed......on the Zumo our little lane is not even shown!.......is there anyway of upgrading the detail of the mapping?

Also in control panel, regional etc there's:

Change the system locale

The system locale is the language that is used to display the text in menus and dialog boxes for programs that do not use Unicode. You might need to change the default system locale when you install additional display languages on your computer. Selecting a different language for the system locale does not affect the language in menus and dialog boxes for Windows or other programs that do use Unicode.

Not a clue if Mapsource is affected if you change the settings :o

especially Bumkin....

No problem, it's Bumpkin BTW ;)

Well 'La Janais' is shown but I assume that's a hamlet rather than your actual house as your location appears to be away from the road. Google earth actually has you in the middle of a field but I'm assuming that yours is what looks like a farm at the end of the lane. Is your lane (Lieu-Dit la Janai?) a public road or a privately maintained drive? The start of it is shown but not the full length. As a rule only public highways will be included though it does appear on ViaMichelin. If it is a public road then get onto Navteq here and suggest that they add it, expect to see it featuring around 2010 though...

I had a look in the registry (start > run > regedt32) and whilst there is a 'language' key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Garmin > Mapsource > Products, changing it from ENGLISH to FRENCH had no impact.

The installation directory (in my case c:\garmin) has dynamic link libraries in various languages (e.g. MapSourceFRA.dll) but I can't see where the application looks to choose the correct--or in your case the incorrect--library.

Hi BumPkin, Sorry for the typo earlier!!! Yes, our lane is the Lieu-Dit La Janais. It is a public lane. On the TomTom we had before it's full length was shown but not on the Garmin. This is true of a lot of the little lanes round here. It looks like you're going cross country. It seems to us that the Garmin maps are not as detailed as the Tom Tom ones.

Hi Tim, Thanks for this. I have had some limited success with changing the name of some of the ENU dll's to FRA to fool the system before installation but there are also a lot of country specific files in cab's and I can't change them. Not giving up yet though!!!

Mrs Spotless ( At this rate I'll have to get my own ID and stop using the old mans!!!)

Two different map companies, two different data sets...

It's Unfortunate that TomTom's map company Tele Atlas has the lanes around your place in detail, but Garmin's company Navtech doesn't...

But don't assume that this is the case everywhere... I've not read that Tele Atlas maps are more detailed in general, and I've used GPS for quite some years and pay attention to these things... (about to take posession of my fifth GPS... a Garmin to be honest)

Consider that you don't need GPS to navigate around your home... as you already know where to go... :aidan
