Help.
I want to put Mapsource onto a Samsung N130 netbook.
I have a stand alone CD Drive thingy but will it need to be a DVD one?
I can get the setup disc in.When prompted to insert disc one either it gets so far or just wont run it so it is possible the info on this disc is damaged the disc itself looks fine.
So the question is can I get Mapsource onto the netbook if I had my computers set up in a network?
Mapsource is on the Desktop and my laptop.
Cheers.

P.S.
I seem to have to start with Map source V7,3discs then put in V9which is a DVD so that means the drive would need to be DVD?
can i goSet up disc>V9 and miss V7?

Copy the Mapsource disc to a hard drive, connect harddrive to netbook, install... I have done this many times with different programs no problem...

Not sure how to do that.
I have an external hard drive which i thought had mapsource on it,copied from another computer. But when i connect to thr netbook and select a garmin file it says it has no???? somthing or other cannot recall off top of head!

Connect the external drive to a computer with dvd reader, copy the dvd in its entirety to the hard drive, reconnect to netbook, run setup/install. Should work fine...

second option and easier one for me.

I used a desktop with a dvd drive and a card reader slot, I got an 8gb sd card from 7day shop.com which I think cost me about 6 quid.
Copied the entire contents of the mapsourse dvd onto the sd card and then installed from the sd card onto the samsung netbook.
Worked a treat.

That is exactly the same procedure, only difference being the media used:thumb

Whatever works:clap

OK I have an SD card.
So I could install the setup disc via the drive I have.
On my desktop copy V9 DVD to the SD card..
Install the SD Card in the SD slot on the N130.
Select SD card in My Computer. Then select setup file and away it goes?

If the netbook and desktop are networked, just "share" the DVD drive on the desktop PC and the netbook wil access it perfectly.

They are not networked.I do not know how to do it either.
I think i understand how to do it with the SD card.
I just dont understand if the hard drive I have is a back up of all the info etc on my laptop why it wont work from there?

Coz you need to do an install of the program not a recovery..

Ah right. So I would need to instal it in the hard drive?
What would i need to do to make sure it was going to the external hard drive and not the lap top/desk top hard drive

Although you could probably mess around installing the programme on the external hard drive it never going to work on the netbook, because (assuming you are running Windows of some flavour) the programme need to see the registry entries (which will be on the PC's internal drive).

The simple way to install on a netbook from a DVD is to image the DVD to an ISO file using ImgBurn (Google it - its free). Put the image file on any media that you can see with the netbook, USB stick, smart card or external hard drive or even a network share.

Then install VirtualCloneDrive on the netbook (Google it - its free!). This will give you a virtual optical drive on the netbook (like it says on the tin). You then mount the image in the virtual drive and away you go. It will behave exactly as if you had a physical drive.

If you need any help with this, feel free to drop me a PM as I'm not far away from you and am doing this sort of stuff all the time.

Ok First off thanks for all the help so far.
But i am getting bogged down with trying to imagine what i have been told!Am at work on the phone .Should not have started this lol.
Can i not just have Mapsource on the external hard drive and just use it plugged into the net book?

Simple answer: not without a hell of a lot of messing about, and why would you want to do that anyway, rather than just installing to the netbook?

If you are running out of space to install on the netbook then this thread might help: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1720644

The reason for having the net book ,which was a freebie, wass so that when i go away with the camera on the bike i have somewhere to dump the footage. then i thought with my 2610 getting tempramental mapsource may be good to have too.then i worried about space on disc etc.
be better on the netbook if i can do it save carting around loads of extras......

Presumably you would go about this by using your desktop PC to install on the external drive. This won't work as Mapsource writes stuff in the registry during install and when you plug the drive in the Netbook it won't have that info. You could try and do it yourself using regedit, but good luck!!!

You need to do a full install ON the Netbook directly. Either do this using a network and sharing the drive (easy - but you said you cannot do this) or you have to create an ISO image of the installation disks on the external hard drive, then install from these on the Netbook directly.

I would not install Mapsource on an external drive by the way. The assigned drive letter can change and then the registry will not match. Always install on a local ( C: ) drive.

Once you get it installed, it should work fine - I do exactly what you want to do!

Karnevil.....My ability with computers, is a million miles away from the rest of these guys....:bow

However, if you CAN beg/borrow/steal a little USB DVD player, then MapSource will glide straight into your netbook. I've done it twice on a Samsung NC10....It just worked, which is a good job, as I had no 'Plan B'....;)

HTH.....:)

Crikey this is getting compicated :blast

I think Boredrider has about the right way for me to go unless I can get hold of a DVD drive! At least I am familiar with that process!
If not then i think BR will be having a few PM's
