Mapsource/Zumo question

I have a Zumo 500 complete with City Navigator Europe NT 2008

My question is, Does the Zumo save Maps, Waypoints, etc to it's own built in memory or to the SD card.

The reason for my question is when trying to save all my European maps (UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain etc.... the Zumo tells me I don't have enough storage capacity available so am limited to uploading maps for the UK & NW France on;y.

I have a 2Gb SD with about 1.6GB of music saved to it leaving me approx 3MB of usable space.

Assuming maps are stored to the SD card (as opposed to the Zumo's own memory) I assume a larger card will solve the problem.

Is this the case?

yes as far as i know, i have the 220 which said full capacity, so i stuck a 16gb card in and now have plenty of room!!

I have just removed all the music files theoretically leaving me 2Gb of map space on the SD card

Just tried loading the European maps (approx 951Mb) and Mapsource is telling me that only 261Mb is available and to select fewer maps.

WTF?!?!?!

Any further thoughts or suggestions dear chaps?

It sounds as though the maps are being loaded to the Zumo internal memory, not the SD card. I've used Garmin Mapinstall to install maps onto the SD card of my Zumo 220, and I now have two complete map versions loaded (its a long story...) and can select which one is active in the Zumo settings. You should find Mapinstall as a free download on the Garmin site. You can select the destination drive (ie your SD card) and select the map tiles to load. For speed, you would be best to plug the SD card into your PC and write directly to it, rather than writing to it via the Zumo and its USB connection.

You can load from Mapsource to the card, when you click the send to device button the dialogue appears asking you which data types to transfer. If you have map tiles selected then the Maps checkbox should already be ticked. Below this is a drop down menu with your connected GPS as the selected item. From this DD menu you should then be able to select the card as the destination.

You can also do this by taking the card out of the GPS and putting the card in a card reader which should be quicker.
